Identical twins recorded the effects of a vegan diet and meat-eating diet for several months, shown in You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment, a new Netflix documentary based on the research. The series shows the impact of a vegan diet on health and nutrition. The previous vegan documentary Netflix series also changed the way people think about plant-based diets. It has been four years since the previous vegan documentary was released on Netflix.

After four years, director Louie Psihoyos came up with another vegan documentary to leave a similar impact on people to look at plant-based diets. The newly vegan documentary is titled “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment” streaming on Netflix in time for Veganuary. To note, this documentary is based on the study of Stanford comprised of 22 pairs of identical twins where one was put on a meat-eating diet and the other on a plant-based diet, published in November. The Stanford study targeted to control the genetic differences and influence of different diets on lifestyle reflecting the existing research about the impact of a plant-based diet on cardiovascular health-heart disease which is one of the leading reasons for deaths in the United States. At the start of the Stanford study, the average baseline LDL cholesterol level was 118.5 mg/dL for participants based on meat diets and 110.7 mg/dL for those based on vegan diets. By the end, the latter dropped to 95.5 and the former to 116.1 with the optimal LDL cholesterol level below 100. In addition, the plant-based diet-following participants exhibited a drop of 20 percent in fasting insulin, while the unversed with higher insulin levels carried a risk of developing diabetes, and lost weight with an average of 1.9kg than the participants who were based on meat diets.
