Initially, Corporal Craig Gibson was charged with aggravated assault but later the charges were raised to second-degree murder when Brett Sheffield lost his life due to his injuries sustained in the bar fight. Police reports have stated that the fight occurred at a bar near Portland Street and King Street West, east of Bathurst Street. The businessman was hit by an elbow to his upper jaw which rendered him lost his consciousness. After being taken to the hospital, Brett was pronounced brain dead. Two days later, the doctors declared him dead on August 30, 2023. One of his colleagues at Next Gen Drainage said Brett Sheffield passed away on August 30 due to a random act of violence.” Scots soldier Cpl Gibson was arrested on the same day of the brawl on August 28.
