Israel-Palestine conflict

The Israel-Palestine conflict is a prolonged and deeply rooted geopolitical dispute origins dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dispute between the two countries mainly revolves around competing national aspirations and territorial claims by Palestinians and Israelis. It started during the late 19th century when Jewish immigration to Palestine was followed by the part of the Ottoman Empire which escalated the dispute. The League of Nations allowed Britain a mandate over Palestine after World War I, causing further Jewish immigration to Palestine. The dispute mounted as both Arab and Jewish communities sought self-determination.

The United Nations proposed a plan in 1947 to partition Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, while Jerusalem was an international city. However, Jewish leaders agreed with the US but the Arab states rejected it, leading to the Arab-Israeli War in 1948. Following the war, Israel declared independence, but the neighboring Arab nations invaded it causing the displacement of numerous Palestinians. The establishment of Israel was followed by subsequent conflicts including the 1967 War and the Yom Kippur War was fought in 1973.
