It is a thrilling time to be alive, particularly if you enjoy comic books. If you’re sick of graphic novels from the West and manga from Japan, try Korea’s new brilliantly colored digital imports.
Webtoons or manhwa, the Korean equivalent of manga, have finally earned a place in the upper echelons of the comics industry, previously dominated by Western cartoonists and Japanese mangakas.
The individuals behind the phenomenon climbed up slowly and punched a hole for the forerunners. The combination of luck and effort pays off in the end.
Here is a comprehensive list of the finest manhwa, whether you’re a webtoon novice looking to get a whiff or a manhwa fan looking for a new story to binge-scroll.
Best Manhwa 2023
The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor
If Asian web fiction is a form of addiction, The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is likely the gateway drug for many of its ardent readers, with the 2007 release of the light novel introducing Weed’s adventures to the general public.
Weed’s adventure in the VRMMORPG Royal Road was fraught with peril, thrilling battles, and, most crucially, opportunities to earn cash. Weed, or Lee Hyun in real life, is a thrifty god-tier gamer.
The odd thing about this is that Weed is a sculptor, which is not exactly a conventional occupation. To be precise, a legendary Moonlight Sculptor.
Weed embarks on a path to dominance and wealth, leaving enemies’ carcasses in his wake, using a set of skills that not even the readers could have anticipated.
LMS is a unique take on the popular “game isekai” subgenre, featuring an eccentric cast of protagonists in a game universe that any reader or gamer would want to explore.
Cheese In The Trap
If you want to attempt romantic manhwa but cringe at the thought of soapy scenes in generic stories, Cheese in the Trap is a fine place to start.
The protagonist of this classic manhwa is the model student Hong Seol, who resumes her studies after a lengthy hiatus. Unfortunately, she becomes entangled in a precarious relationship with “Mr. Perfect” Yoo Jung.
Seol unwittingly attracts the resentment and animosity of many of Jung’s admirers. Complex relationships and characters in a college setting. True, it’s not that difficult to figure out. Cheese in the Trap is an indispensable staple of the manhwa genre.
A complex yet realistic examination of college romantic relationships, class differences, and peer and social pressure is concealed by the art style’s simplicity. Unsurprisingly, this well-written manga is always featured on lists of essential webcomics.
Second Life Ranker
Second Life Ranker is a top-tier manhwa about vengeance. You can announce this in webtoon forums, where nearly everyone will nod, concur, and gush.
It is the tale of Yeon-woo, who inherits a secret diary from his deceased identical brother. And any journal that begins with “By the time you hear this, I guess I will be already dead….” is an ominous one.
The memoir describes his twin sibling Jeong-woo’s mystical experiences as a ‘ranker’ in the Obelisk or Tower of the Sun God. In this mysterious location, dimensions and universes converge.
Second Life Ranker is not only an excellent revenge manga. It’s much more than that, it’s a suspenseful thriller that will make you leave your seat in silence. SLR begins as a typical, somewhat slow-paced manhwa about an overpowering main character.
The reader’s perseverance will be rewarded by the story’s thoughtful pacing, reasonable power scaling, and memorable twists. Obviously, the fantastic imagery is merely the icing on the cake.
Catharsis
Catharsis takes the phrase “fighting your inner demons” literally in this horror webtoon that investigates the human psyche as if it were a dark corridor.
Leon Mori is dissatisfied with life, a social outcast, and is drawn to his teacher. Just an average secondary school student. However, Leon has unusual eyes: he perceives sounds as hues.
These eyes also observe abominable creatures prowling the night. It comes out that these monsters, known as timorems, are personified fears. Furthermore, Catharsis is the organization that combats these ills.
This webtoon is so brilliant at depicting terror that it’s frightening. The color shift also contrasts sharply, from pleasant brilliant hues to dark, nightmare backdrops of our worries.
Leon is a likable MC. When confronted with timorems, he does what any high school MC would do: he panics, flees, yells, and faints.
The fear-fighting gimmick of Catharsis is not precisely an original concept. Sweet Home does it well, too, but the author’s execution is a one-of-a-kind experience that any manhwa fan should have.
Omniscient Reader
Omniscient Reader is no ordinary isekai. While the novel approach is not novel, the pacing and scrupulously crafted setting and characters make Omniscient Reader a consistent presence on lists of the best manhwa.
The manhwa centers on a solitary office worker named Kim Dokja who is obsessed with web novels and has become the last reader of “Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse.”
As the author of the novel uploads the epilogue, Dojka receives a message of congratulations. And chaos ensues as the protagonist encounters a familiar setting: the novel’s introductory paragraph.
Do you know that a new promotional video for the upcoming Fall 2023 anime season, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, has already aroused the interest of viewers before the summer 2023 anime season has even concluded:
Dokja enters the novel unwittingly and becomes the only character who knows the world will end. Fans of the popular web novel Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint were ecstatic to see the previously imagined characters and scenarios rendered in vibrant webtoon panels.
The concept of the manhwa will captivate a reader who appreciates thinking. This journey will captivate your attention and inspire you to support Dokja and the other survivors.
Noblesse
After 820 years of sleep, vampire guardian Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, also known as Rai, awakens to a world he scarcely recognizes. This is not your typical vampire tale.
Rai may be the stereotypical protagonist of a vampire novel: distant, enigmatic, and charismatic. However, he is not the immortal killer who long ago lost compassion for the innocent.
Rai discovers his faithful servant, Frankenstein, disguised as a high school principal. The emotionless super-vampire then decides to enroll in Korea’s oldest high school in order to acquire the values and trends of the modern world. The introduction of Rai to the world of high school is filled with silly antics, intriguing plot twists, and explosive fight sequences.
As one of the webtoon’s Big Three, Noblesse merits its place in the hearts of its fans. Obtaining an anime adaptation as a result of Crunchyroll is a formality. Even though many fans noticed a decline in plot quality in later chapters, they still amassed more than 400 million views on Webtoons alone.
The Beginning After The End
The Beginning After the End is an additional example of isekai manga. Similarly to the other entries on this list, this is an uncommon story. King Grey is an orphan who becomes king in a martial universe where the size of your fist determines your level of respect. However, despite his success, Grey feels disoriented and lonely.
You could say that his murder by poison is the liberation his soul craves. Grey is reincarnated as Arthur Leywin in a magical universe. In addition, Arthur is extremely unique, he was born into a caring family and is surrounded by people.
The former king resumes his journey with new aims and aspirations. Because Arthur is not overwhelmingly potent, TBATE is viable. Instead, he is gifted and intelligent, and he exploits these qualities to increase his power.
Every time he meets a new person, he establishes a new relationship, and these friendships strengthen him emotionally. In the narrative, there is an overall development of a wonderful character. Not just a character who is already powerful, enigmatic, and defeats enemies for no reason.
Grey is aware of how heavy the cranium that holds the crown is and how lonely the top is. As a result, when he is reincarnated as Arthur, he acquires a new sense of purpose: the desire to live his life to the utmost. Truly a beginning after an end, where you cannot help but encourage him on and follow his story.
The God of High School
Say no more if you miss classic fight manga. Here is a manhwa about combat, in which the protagonists speak less and fight more. And the focus is on combat tournaments. You can practically sense your favorite fighting anime from your youth bursting forth from your memory.
Webtoon-favorite The God of High School evokes this sense of familiarity, similar to how Dragon Ball Z once captivated an entire generation with its battles. Mori Jin, a 17-year-old martial artist, is recruited to compete in a tournament titled “The God of High School.”
And, similar to DBZ, the antagonists the main protagonists fight progress from low-level to world-level to realms beyond human prowess. But what distinguishes TGOH from the popular old anime is the incorporation of borrowed powers from the world’s known supernatural creatures.
This manga is essentially a Korean ode to Dragon Ball Z and East Asian culture. And it’s the type of love letter that only a true fan could write. The God of High School makes combat narratives entertaining again. Every combat chapter is well-crafted, with combat sequences executed competently. And with exceptional art to boot.
When the Crunchyroll Originals anime was released, these sequences became even better, attracting more readers who can’t wait to learn more about Jin’s adventures.
Tower Of God
The announcement of the anime adaptation of this isekai manga is one of the most anticipated on this list, second only to the top spot. Obviously, who wouldn’t want to see this story come to life?
Twenty-fifth Bam is the protagonist of Tower of God, which centers on his exploits within the enigmatic Tower. This mysterious structure is not straightforward, it shelters more than just beings and trials.
The narrative of the manhwa is a marvel in and of itself. The Tower is Pandora’s box of mysteries, the story’s immense detail is so enthralling that the initial artwork does not do it honor.
The good news is that author SIU is constantly striving to improve his craft. As the reader continues, the change becomes more apparent. The final chapters contain manga eye treats.
While SIU isn’t precisely Eiichiro Oda, the story’s expansive world-building is reminiscent of One Piece. And, most importantly, the plotlines are well-written and resolved. It is no surprise that it has 1 billion views on Webtoon alone.
Solo Leveling
Few of the other manhwas on the list can compete with Solo Leveling for the top spot, but it’s impossible to deny the influence of this popular webcomic. Any story about an underdog, particularly a great one, will always be highly addictive to manhwa and manga readers. And Solo Leveling is one darn good underdog tale.
The manhwa is about rank E hunter Sung Jinwoo, known as “humanity’s weakest.” Jinwoo ascends the strength hierarchy and becomes humanity’s only hope.
In a world where spatial disturbances known as Gates have appeared everywhere, bearing with them monsters from other dimensions, the frail Jinwoo is compelled to court danger in order to pay for his mother’s medical expenses.
When he becomes the Player of the System, a once-in-a-lifetime event grants him the ability to level up continuously through objectives and Gate expeditions.
The story was already an engrossing classic hero tale when it was published as a web novel. Solo Leveling’s fortunes changed, however, when DUBU arrived and brought vitality and color to the fans’ imagination.
It attracted admirers from all over the world, and as a result, the webtoon industry gained new followers. Of course, a superb plot plus eyegasmic art? This popularity is deserved.
Have you ever wondered how to make a phantom character appear cool? DUBU has given Jinwoo’s intelligent Shadows a more menacing appearance than any fan could imagine. With a Netmarble RPG game agreement and an upcoming anime in 2023, Solo Leveling is unstoppable, similar to its protagonist.
