A new, very different kind of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is in the works. It will be based on The Last Ronin, a grim, futuristic graphic novel about turtles that came out in 2020.
Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, which owns the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, says that the video game version of The Last Ronin will be darker and more grown-up than the comic.
Rosen compared the upcoming third-person action role-playing game to Sony’s recent God of War games in an interview with Polygon last week. He also said that the game will be true to the story of The Last Ronin arc, which is set in the future when only one of the turtles has survived.
Other TMNT games, like Shredder’s Revenge from last year, usually let you play as all four turtles (and sometimes their allies Splinter, April O’Neil, and Casey Jones), but The Last Ronin will mostly be about one character.

Rosen said that other characters could be playable in flashbacks, which is how the comic series works. However, the main action is said to focus on the only surviving turtle.
When The Last Ronin comic series was announced, it wasn’t completely clear who the last Ninja Turtle was. The story of the arc was built around a Ninja Turtle who wore a black mask and fought with all four turtles’ signature weapons: nunchaku, sai, bo staff, and two katanas.
The name of the last surviving turtle, Michelangelo, was not revealed until the last pages of the first issue of The Last Ronin. The Foot Clan killed all of the remaining turtles and Master Splinter, so Mike went to a war-torn New York City to find justice for their deaths.
The Last Ronin came out as a five-issue miniseries from IDW in 2020. Kevin Eastman wrote the arc, which was based on an idea he and Peter Laird had for the TMNT in the late 1980s.
Like the comic book series The Last Ronin, the video game will be aimed at older people, just like the recent collaboration between Activision and Call of Duty to add Shredder to the shooter series.
Rosen stated that there are chances for several TMNT games aimed at both younger and older age groups and that Paramount can take “multiple approaches [to the franchise] and not dial back to make the game something it shouldn’t be.”
Rosen said that an unnamed studio is making a video game version of The Last Ronin and that it might not come out for “a few years.” But like the throwback beat-em-up Shredder’s Revenge, which was made by Tribute Games and DotEmu, and the Cowabunga Collection, which was made by experts in collecting retro games, Digital Eclipse, Rosen said they’ve found the right partner to turn The Last Ronin into an ambitious AAA video game.
Rosen said that in the coming months and years, there will be a lot more information about The Last Ronin and a lot more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games. Fans of the Ninja Turtles will soon be able to play a new game with the heroes in a half-shell on Roblox.
The game will come out at the same time as the new animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Gamefam is making the Roblox game. This is the same company that made Sonic the Hedgehog’s Roblox game, Sonic Speed Simulator.
