The Legend of Heroes

The Legend of Heroes

The Legend of Heroes: Nihon Falcom created The Legend of Heroes, or Eye Densetsu, as it is known in Japan. After beginning in the late ’80s as a spinoff of Dragon Slayer, this series has grown into its decade-long continuity with fourteen books and several spinoffs.

The Trails subseries, or Kiseki in Japan, consists of every game in the franchise released after 2004. The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki II – Crimson Sin is the most recent installment released in 2022.

Nihon Falcom is responsible for the creation of the series. As a series, it can be traced back to 1989 with the release of Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes. It came out for PCs, consoles like the Genesis and Super NES, and handhelds like the TurboGrafx-16.

The latter wouldn’t see an English release until 2005, and it would be the first and only game in the series to do so. Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes II continued the series in Japan and was released in 1992 for the same assortment of platforms.

Dragon Slayer was dropped from the title for the third game in the series, The Legend of Heroes III (1994), which was localized to English as The Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch.

The Legend of Heroes

The Legend of Heroes IV (1996) and The Legend of Heroes V (1999) would follow; outside of Japan, these entries would be retitled The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion and The Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean, respectively. Each game in the “Gagharv trilogy” contributes to the overarching story in the same universe.

After completing the Gagharv Trilogy, Falcom introduced an all-new world and story in The Legend of Heroes VI: Trails in the Sky (2004). Two sequels were released after the VI dropped from the title: Trails in the Sky SC (2006) and Trails in the Sky 3. (2007).
