Summer Games Done Quick Raises $3 Million For Charity

With amazing speedruns of Elden Ring, Tunic, GTA Vice City, and many other games, SGDQ 2022 raises an amazing $3.01 million for the charity Doctors Without Borders.

Summer Games Done Quick 2022 has come to an end after a magnificent week of outstanding speedruns, with a total of over $3.01 million USD earned for the global charity Doctors Without Borders. Over 120 speedruns, spanning from fast hits to longer runs took place during SGDQ 2022, which took place from June 26 to July 3. Some speedrunners show off tremendous technical expertise, others use cunning techniques to take advantage of strange mechanics and flaws, and yet others simply enjoy the thrill of speedrunning.

We can undoubtedly identify a few highlights, but there are just too many spectacular runs to list them all. Rubiehart opened the presentation with a Shadow of the Colossus run, taking on the game’s towering animals in a randomly chosen order while showcasing some amazing tactics to launch oneself up onto the game’s more enormous giants.

Helix13_ showcased the Super Monkey Ball-like game Rolled Out in a fast 20-minute run jam-packed with great maneuvers if you’re into the more technical side of speedrunning. While DemonChildElise displayed her prowess in a captivating run of the lesser-known time-rewinding 2D action game Cogen: Sword of Rewind, Groshiken displayed some incredible techniques to rip through the platformer Celeste. While Covert Muffin, a seasoned runner, showed why Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 is still one of the most enjoyable speedruns for its combination of bugs and high-skill tricks, Kekumanshoyu demonstrated the promise of Metroid Dread, which is set to release in 2021.

Maybe a longer run is more your style? In that case, we heartily recommend frob’s 4-hour marathon of the massive JRPG Yakuza: Like A Dragon, which delves into the series’ shift to turn-based gameplay and includes some fantastic couch karaoke. Eddaket showed excellent judgment in a Pokémon Shining Pearl run for more turn-based enjoyment. Both Mr. Shasta’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Dayoman’s Spyro the Dragon, which included some extremely excellent tech, brought vibrant 3D platforming from both the old and the modern to the stage. While discussing his playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Linkus7 discovered the ideal balance between lucidity and humor in other places.

Regarding some of the other highlights, longtime GDQ favorite kz frew highlighted the glitch-filled disaster that is GTA: Vice City Definitive Edition in a happy final run before passing the speedrunning torch to the following generation of runners in a beautiful closing moment. Andrew Shouldice, the creator of Tunic, and Kevin Regamey, the audio designer, were on-call to discuss how they created the challenging action-puzzle game with speedrunning in mind as SunnymuffinSR expertly handled the controller.

The most entertaining performances included watching Illumina defeat some horribly cursed RNG in a Minecraft random seed run, an 11-minute demonstration of the camera trick puzzler Perspective by AChocolateOrange, and an extremely close The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening race between Glan and TGH.

The most mesmerizing part of the event may have been when SpootyBiscuit and Windeu joined forces for a two-person Step Mania dance performance, weaving in and out of each other’s path. You have to see it for yourself to fully understand the wonder. A 4-person Pokémon Emerald randomizer that featured Shenanagans_, adef, 360Chrism, and Keizaron is also something you won’t want to miss. With each level, their pocket monster evolved into a brand-new, fully arbitrary creature.

Elden Ring, a massive open-world spectacle from FromSoftware, served as the show’s finale. Elden Ring all remembrances by catalyst were performed first, and afterward, Hyp3rsomniac performed Elden Ring any percent. The two runners showed off how skilled they already are at the RPG game, and the couch had some great commentary outlining how far the technology has come.

Since its start in 2010, GDQ has now raised more than $40 million USD for charitable causes. On the SGDQ website, you can see the complete schedule for this year’s competition.
