South Eastern Coalfields Limited Became Fastest To Produce 100 Million Tonne Coal

South Eastern Coalfields Limited reportedly has become the fastest to produce 100 million tonne coal in the current financial year since it came into being in 1985. A spokesperson for South Eastern Coalfields Limited said the company attained the target of 100 million tonnes with 32 days left in the time it took in the previous financial year. Since the SECL came into being in 1095, it recorded the fastest 100 mt coal production this year. Reportedly, this financial year the company is 32 days faster than last year. The coal production company is based in Chhattishgarh where it has three mega projects located in the Korba district which contributed a substantial part of its coal production to achieve 100 million tonnes. The other major projects of South Eastern Coalfields Limited in Chhattisgarh are located in Kusmunda and Gevra which produced 23.72 million tonnes and 30.76 million tonnes respectively. SECL’s spokesperson further said that the company’s mega projects contribute around 71 percent of total coal production. South Eastern Coalfields Limited has achieved the fastest 100 million cubic meter (MCuM) overburden removal (OBR) and 100 mt coal dispatch since it came to light in 1985 in the current financial year.  South Eastern Coalfields Limited last month achieved 100 mt coal dispatch for 2023-24.

The spokesperson added that the company had dispatched around 85 mt of coal in FY23. More than 80 percent of the total offtake has been dispatched to the power sector. South Eastern Coalfields Limited is desperately striving to regain its lost position in the CIL. Till FY21, SECL was the largest coal-producing subsidiary of the CIL. However, the company’s output declined to 142.5 mt in FY22, overtaken by Odisha-based Mahanadi Coalfields with 168.2 mt coal production.
