Sony Encourages Its Gamers to Sit Up Straight When Playing Games

According to a recently published patent, Sony would prefer players stand up straight. After a long day bent over a television, Sony may soon want to join the chorus of voices urging viewers to relax their shoulders and stand up straight.

Gamers are no strangers to the kind of back discomfort that can follow these intense sessions, but it’s easy to ignore the consequences of sitting with an unhealthy posture when there are combat passes to complete.

Sony, thankfully, is considering some options for addressing these problems. Sony has the potential to put millions of gamers’ shoulders to rest if the patent, initially filed a few years ago but was just revealed today, is implemented in the PS5.

Sony isn’t the only corporation that may strive to fix poor posture. Even though an entire market is devoted to player comfort, only so much can be done with chairs. According to the patent’s abstract, this perspective feature would use the controller to evaluate a player’s movement and use that data to propose options for improving the player’s posture, such as a pleasant reminder to take a break or sit up straight.

The primary focus of this invention appears to be on preventing the stress injuries that can result from doing the same thing over and over again.

“A game intervention server may evaluate, based on learning models, posture, and physical motions for players for repetitive, unbalanced, or excessive motions, as well as gameplay quality patterns, and compare to thresholds for identifying unhealthy conditions.”

This comes from Sony’s patenting of a “Virtual Dojo,” allowing players to hone their skills before diving into games. This is just one of many patents Sony has filed this year, including an artificial intelligence assistant for the PS5.

Only time will tell which of these ideas Sony pursues, but it’s safe to assume that the company is actively exploring novel methods to enhance its goods’ appeal to consumers. It’s crucial to remember that patents like this rarely result in fully-fledged capabilities being published to consumers because it’s not apparent how exactly this function would be integrated into existing PlayStation hardware.

It might not come out until the next generation of game consoles is available, if at all. Until then, it’s up to each player to tune in to their cues about when they need a break.
