Together, Sony and Tencent now hold more than 30 percent of FromSoftware, the studio behind the Elden Ring video game franchise.

To compare, Tencent now controls 16.25 percent of the company through its Sixjoy subsidiary, while Sony only owns 14.09 percent. The following statement, issued by FromSoftware’s primary shareholder Kadokawa, makes it plain that the company intends to profit from its newfound financial resources.

FromSoftware decided to run the Third-Party Allotment concurrently and separately with Sixjoy within the Tencent Group, which has strength in its capabilities to develop and deploy mobile games and other network technologies in the global market including China, and SIE within the Sony Group, which has strength in its capabilities to deploy IP in games, videos, and various other media around the world.”

Kadokawa, who still controls 69.66% of FromSoftware, has said that the company will increase its focus on developing original intellectual property.

Specifically, “FromSoftware will aim to proactively invest in the development of more powerful game IP for itself to strengthen FromSoftware’s development capabilities and will seek to establish a framework that allows the expansion in the scope of its own publishing in the significantly growing global market.”

FromSoftware has released a slew of critically acclaimed games, with Elden Ring being the most recent. As a result of the success of games like Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Sekiro, the developer has risen to prominence; their title Elden Ring is currently ranked among the top 10 best-selling video games in American history. Sony and Tencent’s investment doesn’t look too horrible.
