Samsung Galaxy S23: Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip at the end of 2022, which will be used in many of the most popular smartphones in 2023. The Galaxy S23 will be one of the first devices to market with Qualcomm’s new processor.
Early benchmarks indicated that Samsung’s flagship S23 Ultra would feature an overclocked Gen 2, and it now appears that the entry-level S23 would share this enhancement. A few weeks ago, the unannounced Galaxy S23 Ultra appeared in Geekbench results, providing the first indication of an overclocked S23 processor.

Its maximum speed was 3.36GHz, while the base Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 runs at only 3.19GHz. According to a different report, the GPU clock speed of the improved chip will increase from 680MHz to 719MHz.
The improved clock speeds were also seen in a benchmark leak for the entry-level Galaxy S23 (SM-S911B). It’s safe to assume that all three S23 models, including the S23+, will feature the upgraded chip if it’s at the top and bottom of the S23 product line. Because these are prototypes, the S23’s benchmark results are slightly lower than the S23 Ultra’s.

It is possible that the S23 has optimization issues or that its smaller size makes it more challenging to maintain an adequate temperature environment. This is a problem with more recent Snapdragon chips.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from last year was a fast processor, but it overheated easily and throttled heavily. Early Gen 2 benchmarks on reference hardware show continued improvement over the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1’s thermals and overall performance.

The Gen 2’s highest-clocked core may have more thermal headroom because it uses a newer CPU design. There is a risk, however, that this will reduce the S23’s efficiency over the long term. Whether or not you can play games on your phone depends on its thermal design; without a fan, it’s difficult to dissipate heat.
In February of 2023, Samsung will likely debut the S23 line. By then, we should know if Samsung’s agreement with Qualcomm will mandate the inclusion of this accelerated Snapdragon chip in all S23 models.
