Sam Altman To ReJoin OpenAI as CEO After New Board’s Appointment

OpenAI confirmed the development through a statement shared on X formerly Twitter. Sam Altman will resume as CEO of the startup after the company hired a new board led by Bret Taylor. The other members of the board are Adam D’Angelo and Larry Summers. The company reached an agreement in principle for Altman to return to the company as CEO with a new initial board. OpenAI took to Twitter and posted, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.”

However, before making this announcement the company officially announced that former Twitch boss Emmett Shear will join OpenAI as interim CEO on Monday while Microsoft announced that recently fired CEO Sam Altman will join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team alongside Greg. Sam Altman was fired from the company on Friday, November 17, following his conflict with the board members regarding the speed of AI development and monetization.

Recently, Altman was involved in negotiation for his return when he demanded the removal of current board members. However, Sam Altman credited Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for his return to OpenAI. For the unversed, Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI for advanced AI research. Sam wrote on X, “I love openAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. when I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. With the new board and Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAi, and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft (sic).”
