Rescue Operation Temporarily Stopped In Uttarkashi Tunnel After Cracking Sound Heard

On Friday, the members of the rescue teams and other emergency personnel got some warmth from a bonfire after the rescue operation was temporarily halted at the entrance of a tunnel where road workers were stuck following the tunnel collapsed in Uttarkashi. The rescue operation was stopped after a sudden cracking sound was heard and the drilling machine formed a snag. On Friday, November 17, 2023, i.e. yesterday, NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation) stated that a large-scale cracking sound occurred when the rescuers were attempting to restart the drilling machine. But suddenly a cracking sound was heard and caused a panic situation among the rescue team workers in the tunnel.

As per the reports, the same sound was also heard previously therefore the strong possibility of further collapse has been predicted. The meeting has been called to discuss further decisions and steps in the rescue operation. Notably, a C-17 transport aircraft has been called from the Indian Air Force to airlift 22 tonnes of critical equipment to Dehradun from Indore. Reportedly, the rescuers drilled through up to 24 meters of rubble till Friday afternoon in the Silkyara tunnel. They are inching closer to the 40 workers trapped inside for the past five days.

Kindly note that the 40 workers inside the collapsed tunnel have light, oxygen, water, food, and medicines passed through a pipe. They can also communicate through a walkie-talkie. Their families are waiting anxiously outside the tunnel. Even some have camped outside. An official of the Odisha government’s labor department spoke to workers after the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Uttarkashi.
