Pretoria Zoo Faces Backlash On Social Media For Poor Facility
The South African National Biodiversity Institute asserted that it is endeavoring to ensure that holidaymakers’ experiences at Pretoria Zoo are not compromised by the infrastructure upgrades currently underway. This response from SANBI came after a widespread outcry on social media from the visitors who visited the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria and were not satisfied with the infrastructure condition of the zoo which is one of the largest zoos in the world. South Africa is famous for its zoos.
Reportedly, the visitors shared images of broken roofs, empty enclosures, and litter strewn in the Apies River, on the internet. The shocking images showing the poor infrastructure of the world’s 8th largest zoo did not take long to spark a widespread backlash. Meanwhile, on Thursday, January 11, 2024, the chief executive of the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Shonisani Munzhedzi said during the press conference, “The infrastructure we inherited when we assumed management was old, so we’ve had to redo a lot of things,”
The Chief executive of SANBI further added that about R105 million has been released for the upgrades and maintenance work of the zoo, out of which R88 million already has been paid to contractors. Shonisani Munzhedzi further said that they are trying to balance visitors’ expectations by moving animals to open enclosures when their enclosures need repair. He ensured that holidaymakers could still see as many as 4,840 animals in the zoo. To note, the entrance fee for the Pretoria Zoo has also been reduced by 17 percent. Stay tuned.
