Pokemon Card Releases – What We Know So Far

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game may be curious as to when the first Pokémon Scarlet and Violet cards will be added to the TCG since Generation 9 will be released this Fall. Game Freak revealed that Gen 9 would debut on November 18, 2022, in the second game player teaser for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet released in June. It begs the issue of when the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG series will also emerge, given that the launch of the new generation is only around the corner.

Ten mainline expansions and specialized Pokémon card sets have been released for the Pokémon Sword and Shield series since the May release of the Pokémon Astral Radiance TCG set. The Sword and Shield TCG series will receive its next set, Lost Origin, on September 9, 2022, following the release of the Pokémon GO TCG crossover in July. In addition to bringing back the “Lost Zone” mechanism from Pokémon Platinum, the Pokémon Lost Origin TCG expansion release will include the debut of Sinnoh Legendary Giratina as a VSTAR card.

There haven’t been any other TCG releases announced for the remainder of the year aside from Lost Origin. Most Pokémon card expansions typically debut three months after the previous one. Since the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet falls exactly three months after the start of Lost Origin, many fans have begun to wonder whether Gen 9 Pokémon cards may be available sooner than some had anticipated. The potential release dates for the first Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Trading Card Game cards are shown below.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet TCG Release Date

Fans didn’t get to witness the first Pokémon Sword and Shield TCG set until three months after the Galar area RPGs made their appearance when Gen 8 first debuted on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. When analyzing previous games, it becomes clear that The Pokémon Company has generally adhered to a similar release schedule, with the global premiere of a new TCG series taking place the following year. For instance, Pokémon Sun & Moon from Generation 7 didn’t receive their first TCG expansion until February 2017, even though they were published in November 2016.

The Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG series appear to be set for release in early February 2023 based on prior launch cycles. When the Gen 5 Pokémon Black and White RPGs were released in March 2011, the Pokémon TCG last departed from this release timetable. The Pokémon Scarlet and Violet TCG will be released first in Japan around December 2022 if The Pokémon Company follows its previous release forms.

Interestingly, some fans speculate that the TCG may be planning its first simultaneous global debut in December in light of the Lost Origin expansion’s September release date. PokéBeach, a retailer of Pokémon cards, claims that the unusual timing of Lost Origin’s release contrasts with its usual August release date. The Pokémon World Championships are in August, therefore it’s more likely that the set was moved up a month to avoid them. Therefore, fans who are eager to obtain the adorable Gen 9 Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Starters as Pokémon cards will probably have to wait until the beginning of 2023.
