Path of Exile: Grinding Gear Games created and released Path of Exile, a free-to-play action role-playing video game. The game’s initial release for Microsoft Windows was in October 2013, following a public beta test.
An Xbox One version was released in August 2017, and a PlayStation 4 version was released in March 2019. In the grim fantasy world of Path of Exile, the government of the island nation of Oriath sends its citizens to the continent of Wraeclast, a wasteland where many ancient gods once roamed.
Players assume the role of an outcast and can select from the Marauder, Duelist, Ranger, Shadow, Witch, Templar, or Scion character classes. The objective then becomes to return to Oriath by any means necessary, which may include fighting ancient gods or great evils.
Path of Exile Gameplay
From a birds-eye vantage point, the player navigates a single character through vast environments and underground caverns or dungeons, where they must fight monsters and complete side quests from NPCs to level up and acquire new gear.
Path of Exile is often considered the spiritual successor to Diablo II, from which it borrows heavily. The game uses procedurally generated content for all areas outside the main camps for excellent replayability.
While all players on a given server are free to interact with one another inside encampments, the vast majority of the game takes place inside of instances, giving each player or party their private map to explore at will.
There are seven different playable classes from which players can choose (Duelist, Marauder, Ranger, Scion, Shadow, Templar, and Witch). These roles correspond to one or more primary characteristics: strength, agility, and brain.
The Scion stands out because it is aligned with all three attributes despite being a previously locked prestige class released in 2013. The various groups are not prevented from putting money into skills that aren’t a good fit for them, but they will have a much easier time gaining access to training in areas that do.

In random order, items are created from a large pool of base types, each of which can have unique abilities and gem sockets. They’re available in various rarities, each with its fantastic set of benefits. Finding balanced and synergistic gear will take up a significant portion of gameplay time.
Armor, weapons, and certain types of rings with gem sockets can be equipped with an active skill by placing a skill gem in that socket. All equipped skill gems gain experience as the character levels up, allowing the skills to level up and become more powerful.
Support Gems are consumables that can enhance your active skills. A player’s primary attack or skill can be improved in various ways depending on the number of linked sockets they possess, including increased attack speed, faster projectiles, multiple projectiles, chaining hits, life leech, auto-cast spells on critical strike, and more.
Socket restrictions force players to make tough choices about which gems to equip. There are 1,325 passive skills available to all classes, and the player can select one at character level up and occasionally as a quest reward.
These passive abilities enhance Mana, Health, damage, defense, regeneration, speed, and other base attributes. Each player character has a unique passive skill tree starting point. Active skills are organized in a simple linear hierarchy.
In contrast, passive skills are organized in a complex network with individual trunks for each class (aligned with the permutations of the three core attributes). This means that the player shouldn’t just prioritize increasing their primary offense and defense but should also pick the best passive skill tree node.
At the time of the 3.0 Fall of Oriath Release, a character could only have 123 passive skill points (99 from leveling and 24 from quest rewards). An additional Ascendancy class is available to each type, providing much more potent niche benefits.
Except for the Scion, who has access to a single Ascendancy that incorporates characteristics of all other Ascendancy classes, all different types have access to three Ascendancy options. Out of 12 or 14, only 8 can be used for the Ascendancy skill.
Unlike most other action RPGs, Path of Exile does not feature any form of in-game currency. The “currency items” in the game are the foundation of the game’s economy. These items have inherent uses (such as increasing an item’s rarity level, rerolling affixes, or increasing an item’s quality).
They, therefore, provide their own money sinks to prevent inflation, unlike traditional game currencies. While most of these items are used to improve or alter gear, others can be used to locate specific objects, open portals, or restore skill points.

How To Get Started In Path Of Exile
The latest major content update for Path of Exile and the introduction of a new league where players can create powerful enemies to defeat in exchange for enormous amounts of loot make this a great time to jump in.
It doesn’t matter if you want to play Path of Exile solo, with a small group of friends for loot sharing, or with a large group for greater and more frequent rewards; all three play styles are fantastic.
However, the massive passive skill tree, ascendancy options, and map-centric endgame atlas in Path of Exile can make jumping in a highly daunting prospect. It’s unnecessary to have extensive background knowledge to utilize these systems; therefore, let’s dive right in.
1) Download a loot filter
As you progress through Path of Exile and tackle endgame content, you’ll find that the game is rife with loot. If you don’t have a filter, you’ll waste a lot of time searching through irrelevant content. Screen after screen of useless information that will drown anything of value in a sea of trash; you won’t be able to hear the music for the noise.
So, the first step is acquiring a loot filter, which is not hard. I recommend Filterblades’s base installation, which you can do by simply dropping the file into a folder and activating it through the program’s user interface. You can get it from this page and rest easy knowing that you won’t have to wade through hundreds of drops all at once.
2) Have a character plan going in
I understand how frustrating it can be to settle on a specific character class before you even begin playing. You should save your orbs of regret for minor adjustments rather than a complete overhaul, but “respeccing” is possible in Path of Exile.
Nothing is more frustrating than making it to the endgame only to realize that your build is subpar and having to spend several days rerolling a new character. You’re not required to consult a guide, but if you want to, you can find excellent resources in the official Path of Exile forums, on Reddit, and elsewhere.
Picking a few skills or broad-stroke archetypes like necromancers or Elementalist can also work if you want to forge your path. Do not, under any circumstances, neglect to spend points on health, energy shields, and sustainability.
In this regard, Path of Exile can be a little deceptive, as it is possible to breeze through the game’s beginning and Act structure with relative ease, only to find yourself vulnerable to a one-shot in the endgame if your health is low, your resists are weak, or your other defenses are inadequate.
It’s tempting to become a high-damage machine at the expense of all defenses, but you should resist the urge. In the end, you’ll have to foot the bill!

3) Buy some specific (essential) stash tabs
Since Path of Exile is about loot, we’ll need a place to store our items. Path of Exile does not require a subscription and can be played at no cost. And one of the best models since players can access everything for free, and the focus is primarily on aesthetics.
But at this point in the game, I think 2 of the purchase stash tabs are required if you want to have a good time. The foreign exchange rate is the first and foremost important entry. This is where you can keep track of everything helpful you find along your journey, and I wouldn’t recommend playing the game without it because your world would be too cluttered to enjoy.
For the same reason, having a tab designated explicitly for your map stash is essential, where you can store and reference all the maps you’ve acquired.

4) Don’t forget about ascendancy
Ascendancy points function like passive ones but are typically much more potent and invested in unique trees that aid character development. It’s easy to lose sight of the Labyrinth as you smash your way through the game’s acts.
Labyrinth and Ascendancy Points are the game’s version of a healthy meal before dessert. As you progress through the game, keep an eye out for “trials,” which are elaborate traps appearing in random areas.
You can’t go through the Labyrinth and gain access to the beneficial ascension points without completing these, no matter how tempting it would be to skip them. You can quickly out-level and outgear the first few tiers in the Labyrinth if you’re having trouble, especially if you find some% life regen.
5) Don’t freak out, and have fun!
It’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis before you even begin playing, worrying about whether or not your build is optimal and debating the merits of every potential placement of your points in the passive tree.
Just stop stressing about it! In other words, it’s time to join the Metamorph league and have some fun! When you win this league and use the monster parts you’ve collected to create your bosses, you’ll be rewarded with many rare items and currencies and a wealth of maps.
You get a taste of this system as you progress through the acts, but it truly comes into its own when you begin completing maps and collecting boss-specific organs to craft even more significant, more powerful beasts.
You could make a mistake or two! That’s fine! After getting the hang of the basics, you might want to venture into more challenging game modes like hardcore (where the game over is instantaneous) or solo-self found (where you cannot rely on other players for gear and must instead use what you see or craft).
The more you play Path of Exile, the more you’ll realize how much content there is and how each new league adds exciting twists.
