P Chidambaram

On 25th November 2023, Saturday in a press conference, the former union minister, P Chidambaram said that a caste survey was very important before taking any decision on the reservation benefits and it is going to be conducted by the central government with the census. Recently, the Congress leader and legal expert pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led central government has not conducted the census as it was conducted in 2021 and he has also said that the BJP might defer the decade exercise till after the general election in 2024.

This statement was claimed after Bihar started the caste survey and recommended a total of 65% reservation for the section which was denied. Chidambaram stated that he thinks that if the reservation is there the caste count is important. He believes that caste count should be done with the national census. But BJP did not do the national census of 2021 and they are the end of 2023. They are not going to do it before the elections of next year. He said that his party is promising that if the party wins the election and comes into power at the centre so will conduct the national census and also the caste survey.

Chidambaram has asked who will access the 10% quota. So the count is also going to include SC/ST and OBC. You should also check the percentages that are excluded before you say who is going to access the 10%. He also said in the judgment of the Supreme Court, around 82% have already been excluded and this is just an estimation by anyone. Without the caste survey, it can not happen at all, and how many have been excluded? More information to be shared very soon.
