Reportedly, a unit of police responded to Ford Street shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Emergency services also arrived at the scene simultaneously. The paramedics realized that the man could not be saved by on-site treatment therefore they took him to Opotiki Medical Center where he was transferred to Whakatane Hospital. Suspect Arrested In Opotiki Murder Case
Sources have suggested that the police arrested a man on the same day when the victim succumbed to his injuries at Whakatane Hospital. Reportedly, the prime suspect was arrested following a search warrant was issued. While executing the search warrant, the detectives apprehended a man in connection with the assault that happened on Ford Street in Opotiki and the death of the victim. He was taken into custody on Friday evening, September 22, 2023.

The suspect could not be presented before the judge on the same day of his arrest but he was scheduled to appear in the Whakatane District Court on Saturday, September 23, 2023. The suspect is charged with injuring the victim with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Police urged people to help if anyone witnessed the assault or was in the Ford Street area of Ōpōtiki between 4.10 p.m. and 4.40 p.m. on Thursday.
