When comparing streaming services, it’s important to look beyond simply the content itself. Efforts to reduce customer attrition still need to focus on enhancing the user experience. On Monday, Netflix upgraded its iPhone app with a new UI that included a new billboard layout, new card transitions, new animation for the opening and profile screens, updated haptics, and more.

Janum Trivedi, a former Netflix product designer, tweeted about the upgrade with a video demonstrating the updated app. The software, according to Trivedi’s writing, needed to “feel more fluid, pleasant, and finished.”

Apple iPhone users who use the Netflix app will be greeted by a big card depicting a film or TV show that takes up the majority of the screen. This billboard design was created to advertise a film or TV show that was recommended by the streaming service’s curation team. The update’s parallax effect, in which the wallpaper changes position slightly when the iPhone is tilted, is particularly intriguing. In addition, the title cards now feature a border color that matches the primary hue of the film/television poster.
The “Info” button that used to be on the card’s footer also doesn’t seem to be there. When consumers are interested in learning more about a certain show or movie, they can simply click on the card and be taken to a new page with that content.

The app’s card transfer was not as seamless in the past. The details panel merely slid up when a title was chosen. The transition to the new card has the card expand until it fills the screen, at which point the information is shown.
The animation on the profile screen is also a new and welcome addition. When a user switches profiles, the profile icon no longer slides to the side as it did in the old app, but instead expands as it bounces to the center of the screen before contracting to its normal size and returning to its usual position in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Users of the iPhone app for Netflix will appreciate the recent update, which makes the app more engaging and intuitive to navigate.
