A single particle of sand is used to its fullest potential in what appears to be a teaser for the upcoming Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat 12, a game that has been confirmed but not in-depth details officially published, has a hint of what’s to come at the end of a 30th anniversary “thank you” video message from NetherRealm Studios.
Although brief, it provides a glimpse of what NetherRealm intends to achieve with MK’s backstory and nuanced history. At the end of the video released on Monday (1 May), Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon says:
“Thank you Mortal Kombat fans for 30 years of amazing support. […] We’re not quite done yet.”
The video then cuts to the inside of an hourglass, zooming in on a single grain of sand, which dramatically explodes. Fans of Mortal Kombat 11 will remember that hourglass as the potent tool Kronika, the Titan known as the Keeper of Time, controls, which is at the center of the game’s time-bending narrative, will use.
Young Johnny Cage and adult Johnny Cage meet in Mortal Kombat 11 thanks to Kronika’s ability to shift history, alter time, and transport people from the past into the present.
The hourglass in her logo represents the myriad timelines that Kronika has created and modified to balance Mortal Kombat’s various realms. After Kronika is vanquished by Shang Tsung at the end of Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath story expansion, Kronika’s abilities—powered by her hourglass and crown—are taken by MK’s wicked, shape-shifting wizard.
With plans to start a New Era of the Mortal Kombat timeline (and bring back his deceased comrades), Liu Kang tricks Tsung into time travel, defeats him, and takes Kronika’s skills. In order to train the original Kung Lao for future Mortal Kombat competitions, Liu Kang goes back in time.
At least, it is what happens in one of Aftermath’s endings. In the other, Shang Tsung triumphs once more after beating Liu Kang, taking his thunder and fire god abilities, and eventually taking down Earthrealm, Outworld, and Netherrealm (with Chaosrealm and Orderrealm coming up next). The goal of Shang Tsung’s plan—who is now a giant—is complete realm destruction and dominance.
Mortal Kombat 12 was the subject of several articles that we had written in the past. Click on the following links to acquire further knowledge:

- When Will the Mortal Kombat 12 Trailer Be Released? Planned for 2023 Release.
Aftermath’s Liu Kang ending appears to be the more rational canonical decision for NetherRealm Studios. If the developer intends to create a new trilogy of games and reset the MK timeline, one of Kronika’s current timelines being permanently destroyed seems like a nice place to start. The environment of the Mortal Kombat story that many gamers are familiar with may be brought to life in NetherRealm thanks to the abundance of room and recognizable characters.
There is no reason why Elder Gods like Raiden and Fujin, as well as the forefathers of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile, couldn’t be present if Liu Kang and (The Great) Kung Lao existed 500 years in the past.
Characters like Kitana and Goro, who date back thousands of years, would also be present. When you have a magical hourglass, anything can happen. This year, Mortal Kombat 12 should be released. See the Teaser below:
