Microsoft has announced a new AI-powered assistant that will help make Microsoft 365 apps more productive. Some commercial customers are already testing it.
The new AI feature is called “Copilot,” and it helps make and manage documents, presentations, and spreadsheets, as well as sort and answer emails.
All of the Microsoft 365 apps, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft Viva and Power Platform, will soon have Copilot.
It works like a chatbot and uses the same GPT-4 large multimodal model as the new Bing Chat. Users can create content based on questions they ask each other through a chatbot interface.

It combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with user data in Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365 to make people more productive.
Jared Spataro, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Modern Work and Business Applications said (as reported by Microsoft) –
“Copilot combines the power of large language models with your data and apps to turn your words into the most powerful productivity tool on the planet.”
“By grounding in your business content and context, Copilot delivers results that are relevant and actionable. Copilot marks a new era of computing that will fundamentally transform the way we work.”
It is meant to make writing, editing, and summarising documents in Word easier, and it will work right alongside you to make draughts that can be changed and edited to include more information.
Users can import content from other documents and use natural language commands to describe the ideas that need to be on each slide when using Copilot in PowerPoint.

When it comes to analyzing Excel data, Copilot makes data visualization super fast and makes it much easier to find meaningful insights and trends.
Copilot can also change the way Outlook users manage their email, making it so they spend less time sorting through their inboxes and more time communicating better.

“Copilot knows how to command apps (e.g., ‘animate this slide’) and work across apps, translating a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation.”
