Ryzen 7020 Series “Mendocino” Cpus From Amd Are Unveiled And Are Based On Zen 2

The AMD 7020 series, formerly Mendocino, is the company’s entry-level mobile CPU portfolio. They were initially shown off at CES 2022. The new 7020 series of processors is AMD’s way of keeping track of its mobile CPUs, and they shouldn’t be confused with the Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors, which is where you’ll find AMD’s brand-new Zen 4 cores.

The 7 in 7020 designates that these are included in AMD’s 2023 portfolio (even though they are launching this year), while the two means that they employ Zen 2 cores. Despite being AMD’s older cores, the 7020 series still offers a compelling pricing proposition, and the company hopes to “redefine the everyday notebook” with them. The AMD 7020 processors includes the Ryzen 5 7520U, the Ryzen 3 7320U, and the Athlon Gold 7220U.

CPU Performance Remains Stable

All AMD Ryzen and Athlon 7020 series processors are built on the updated Zen 2 architecture and include up to four cores and eight threads. There are up to four cores and eight threads in these 4.3GHz, 6nm processors. As is customary for such formal comparisons, AMD found that the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U outperformed the Intel Core i3-1115G4 from Intel’s 11th generation of processors. Regarding productivity, AMD claims a 31% improvement in PCMark 10, a 58% improvement in Cinebench R23, and an 80% improvement in 7-Zip. Compared to the industry standard PCMark 10, the company claims its products are 31% quicker to launch applications.

These estimates should be interpreted with some caution, of course. Although Intel’s 12th-generation CPUs have been available for a while, AMD is still using comparisons to the 11th-generation machines. The AMD Ryzen 3 CPU it employs is quad-core, whereas the Intel processor it competes with is dual-core; both companies offered quad-core Core i3 models. The performance you get from it should be sufficient for primary use. Note that the Intel machines used for these testing have 8 GB of RAM, while the AMD machine only has 4.

Despite using an older core architecture, AMD included some modern features in this family of CPUs, including support for LPDDR5 memory and the Microsoft Pluton security processor, so it’s not like they’re completely stuck in the Zen 2 period. Moreover, AMD claims that laptops equipped with their CPUs may play videos for up to 12 hours without needing a recharge. These figures are reasonable approximations for laptops with batteries rated at 40 to 45Wh, which is not an exceptionally colossal battery. The processors support morden power management features including standby.

Rdna2 Graphics For The Entry-level

AMD’s RDNA2 graphics architecture is the central news with the Ryzen and Athlon 7020 series, and it’s also where you’ll discover the fascinating differentiating element in these processors. Even the Athlon Gold 7220U benefits from the powerful and efficient AMD Radeon 610M graphics solution based on the RDNA2 architecture, making this family of laptops ideal for both gaming and long-term mobility.

AMD claims 97 FPS in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, 84 FPS in League of Legends, and 61 FPS in DOTA2 on the Athlon Gold 7220U at 720p resolution. That’s good for integrated graphics on a budget processor, and it should make games more accessible to a broader audience. AMD also boasts AV1 decoding capabilities for high-resolution video streaming and can accommodate up to four screens.

Specs And Availability

Above, we said that there are three different processors available from AMD in their 7020 series: the AMD Athlon Gold 7220U, the Ryzen 3 7320U, and the Ryzen 5 7520U. All of their technical specifications are listed below.

Processor model Cores Threads Speed Cache TDP Graphics
AMD Ryzen 5 7520U 4 8 2.8GHz base / 4.3GHz boost 6MB 8-15W AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
AMD Ryzen 3 7320U 4 8 2.4GHz base / 4.1GHz boost 6MB 8-15W AMD Radeon 610M Graphics
AMD Athlon Gold 7220U 2 4 2.4GHz base / 3.7GHz boost 5MB 8-15W AMD Radeon 610M Graphics

Starting in the fourth quarter of 2022, laptops will be able to purchase AMD Ryzen and Athlon 7020 series processors, with the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U being the first to market. Several budget notebooks feature them feature them feature them, like the Lenovo Ideapad 1, Acer Aspire 3, and the HP 17-inch Laptop. Soon after the Ryzen 3 debuts, other processor families, such as the Ryzen 5 and Athlon series, will also enter the market.
