The Cleveland Browns may be crossing a name on their list, as Matt Rhule – one of the top coaching candidates on the market – declined an interview with the team as they looked for their new head coach.

Rhule’s move, which led Baylor to an 11-2 record this season, was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

Baylor HC Matt Rhule declined the opportunity to be interviewed for the Cleveland Browns head coaching job, per the league sources. Rhule is expected to be a top candidate for the Giants ‘and Panthers’ HC jobs.

Ruhle is seen as a true contender for an NFL opening, with the Giants and Panthers both strong prospects. He could also be considered for the Cowboys’ position if that job really opens up, as expected, that will keep him in the state of Texas.

Coach Ruhle coached at Temple from 2013-16, posting a 28-23 record and a pair of 10-win seasons in both 2015 and 2016. He led a Baylor team that won a game in 2017 to back- to back Bowl games and nearly a Big 12 title this season, defeating Oklahoma 30-23 in the OT. His Bears will play in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday against Georgia.

Matt Ruhle Jets Saw Job Fall Last Season

Ruhle was linked to the Jets’ job last year, and seemed close to getting it. However, he did have a disagreement with the franchise about how to build the coaching staff’s coaching staff.

“I don’t want to say anything about that work,” Rhule told ESPN 1160 in Dallas. “At the end of the day, I will never be in a good marriage. I will never go into a sub-contract of jobs for offense and defense. I will always hire people I believe in – and do things on our way, to believe in the process, to be part of a program. I believe that programs win. ”

Matt Rhule is in serious play for the Giants job.

The Jets love Matt Rhule in their coaching search last year. However, the sticking point is offensive to the coordinator. Rhule wanted then-assistant to Texans Sean Ryan, I said. NYJ didn’t agree.

While on the Adam Schefter podcast, he spoke of the possibility of teaching the pros.

“I don’t think I’m good enough or dumb enough to say I’m not going to be an NFL coach. I just think to me I have such an incredible situation here (at Baylor) that it has to be next to perfect , “Rhule said. “And even then it was hard for me to do. Because you mentioned (Schefter) all the things we did here – it was a lot of hard work. It took a lot of elbow grease. It wasn’t easy.”

Browns Eye 49ers Aids for Interview

The Browns have a good attendance of interview candidates coming in, the latest two additions coming from the 49ers organization.

Cleveland plans to interview Mike LaFleur for the head coaching area. He is currently appearing as the game coordinator for the Niners and the younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.

Browns reported interview candidates:
-Josh McDaniels, Pats OC
-Greg Roman, Ravens OC
-Robert Saleh, 49ers DC
-Kevin Stefanski, Vikings OC
-Mike McCarthy, former Packers HC
-Brian Daboll, Bills OC
-Mike LaFleur, 49ers PGC #Browns

There has also been reported interest between the Browns and San Francisco run game coordinator Mike McDaniel, but no interview has been conducted, according to Schefter. Niners defensive end Robert Saleh is also on the Browns’ list of candidates who have agreed to interviews.

49ers runner coordinator Mike McDaniel is likely to interview the Browns, per source, though nothing has been set.

So the Browns could go to SF and interview Saleh, McDaniel and Mike LaFleur all the same weekend.

In counting interim head coach Gregg Williams in 2018, the Browns have had three head coaches in two seasons. Freddie Kitchens was fired after leading a team with massive expectations on a 6-10 record, losing to the Bengals one-win in the final week of the season.
