List of the Top Video Games of 2022: We’re almost at the end of 2022, and with it came a plethora of video games. Many of our favourite long-running programmes got new instalments this year, and they were eagerly anticipated.
There were also a lot of independent games that surprised and pleased us, as well as mobile games that kept us glued to our screens for hours. Rather than awarding “best” to a single game from 2022, we’ve chosen our top ten.
Through the use of scientific methods such as “What about?” and “Oh, I loved…” followed by some light arguing, we narrowed it down from the whole slate of releases for the year. Here, in alphabetical order, are the top 10 video games of 2022, as chosen by The Washington Post.
Elden Ring
The year’s most highly anticipated release was not just a critical and commercial success, but also a sensation. There were many interesting people to remember, such as Radahn, who learnt gravitational magic so his favourite horse could carry his enormous weight.
Players like the chivalrous “Let Me, Solo, Her,” who helped other players defeat Malenia while wearing only briefs, and the “Cash Lord,” a moniker taken up by comedy troupe leader Mark Phillips as he struggled through his first Souls game in an entertaining marathon of streams, became memorable characters in and of themselves as a result.
“Elden Ring” was a cultural phenomenon that transcended its media in 2022. The following platforms have the game: PC, Xbox One, Xbox X, Xbox Y, Xbox S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
God of War Ragnarok
After the smashing success of the series revival in 2018, expectations were sky-high for “God of War: Ragnarok.” Thankfully, it more than lived up to those expectations. The complex relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus is explored in greater depth throughout the campaign, which is full of surprises and raw, moving moments.
Even while the main story is excellent, the side quests are equally compelling. The fighting is as violent and satisfying as ever, with Kratos and company slicing their way through armies and monsters spanning Norse mythology’s nine realms.

The spectacular, over-the-top boss battles with larger-than-life enemies from previous God of War games are also back in “Ragnarok,” something that was severely lacking in 2018’s “God of War.” The Norse story concludes with “Ragnarok,” a strong and emotional conclusion. The PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 are both compatible.
Marvel Snap
Occultists like me will appreciate the praise that Marvel Snap is competitive accountancy. Rising and rising and rising power levels. Card combinations, stacking, and multiplication all have synergistic effects. Then there’s the critical task of sharing and receiving information with other nerds on social media.
A win. A loss. The risk paid off. And a failed one as well. Modifications to the deck continue. Great drama is condensed into six rounds (and only a few minutes of playtime) with a superhero theme. If you can get the discipline to play just one game. PC, iOS, and Android versions are readily available.
Neon White
Mirror’s Edge, Sonic the Hedgehog, a deck-building game, and a visual novel about a deadly assassin with amnesia all come together fascinatingly in “Neon White.” Do you understand everything? You’ll be parkouring across intricate, floating constructions in this game; you’ll use cards to shoot adversaries in your way and open up new pathways.
The rush of trying to beat your own time across a level by using different cards and routes is reminiscent of the excitement of speedrunning. However, the game’s gift system is where things become interesting. After finishing a level, you’ll unlock a reward that’s always out of the way and tucked away in one of the buildings.
These items can be used to strengthen your relationships with other characters in a visual novel. To obtain these bonuses, players must redo stages and reevaluate their previous movements across the environment. The gameplay cycle is so fast-paced that you’ll want to keep playing. Accessible on the Personal Computer, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
Pentiment
I’d want to see Pentiment take home the trophy for the best team of the year so we can all just go home. Even PlayStation loyalists were considering switching to Xbox Game Pass to continue this story-driven adventure game.

The game takes place in 16th-century Bavaria and is based on a decades-long religious murder mystery that incorporates both art history and real-world events. (The re-appearance of a previously covered detail in a painting is the inspiration for the game’s title.)
Pentiment, a new game from Obsidian, deviates significantly from the studio’s usual fare by focusing on the emotions of change and loss. Xbox 360, Xbox 360 S, Xbox One, and PC.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus
While previous mainline Pokémon games have dabbled in open worlds, “Pokémon Legends: Arceus” is the first to try and create a fully realised one. The game has a new purpose, as well; instead of trying to become Pokémon Champion by defeating the Elite Four, your goal is to complete the Pokédex.
The time spent waiting for battles to load or transition has been eliminated. Instead of having to weaken the Pokémon in combat before you can catch it, Pokémon will emerge right in front of you, and you may sneak up on them and throw Pokéballs at them.
The franchise needed a jolt, and the new gameplay mechanics, coupled with the almost watercolour-like visual of the feudal Japan-inspired Hisui region, are exactly that. Even while “Arceus” has certain technical and visual problems, they never detract from the overall quality and originality of the experience.

Stray
‘Stray’ is a fascinating exploration of environmental storytelling that skillfully challenges our fundamental assumptions about humanity. You spend a lot of time being an adorable nuisance because you play as a cat, which means you enjoy knocking things off tables, sneaking into restricted areas, and generally being a pain.
Even a “meow” button is included! All the while, there’s no sense of discord between these contrasting tones. The entire runtime of “Stray” is riveting and demands your full attention. The city’s stunning cyberpunk neon lights make for a fun adventure.
For newcomers, the game’s simple mechanics and pleasant atmosphere make it a no-brainer recommendation, but veteran gamers will enjoy the game’s feline protagonist and the unique perspective he provides.
Elden Ring isn’t just the best game of the year. it was a bona fide pop cultural phenom. the ability to tell our own story turned players into characters.
i wrote a shoutout to @SupremeDreams_1 aka the “Cash Lord” and his 9-hour fight against Malenia.https://t.co/pVpi79KYrm

Vampire Survivors
Roguelike features and the kind of idle games that are common on mobile and web platforms were combined in the indie hit of the year, creating a new genre that has since become popular. There are almost any game mechanics present, as all you have to do is confirm menu choices by pressing buttons.
Vampire Survivors is not just the best game of the year, but also the most video game-like. Vice revealed in January 2022 that the game took inspiration from the smartphone game “Magic Survival,” thus it’s not completely original.
The reassuring use of famous video game images (legally different sprites based on the Castlevania series), and the addictive music design that simulates the captivating ambience of a casino, are what make the one-man work of “Vampire Survivors” stand out.

Wordle
The validity of Wordle cannot be contested. Wordle’s virality alone would make it the top pick if I were to rank this list differently than alphabetically. Remember the first few months of this year? Your social media feed was probably filled with “Oops, All Squares.”
Yet that is neither its greatest nor only point of strength. Wordle’s slim packaging and low time commitment belie the satisfying mental challenge it provides, as well as the knowledge that you are up against everyone else in the world.
Wordle is the best example this year of the fact that everyone plays games, even if they don’t consider themselves gamers, and this is saying something, given the other games that have come out this year.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3
When it comes to Japanese role-playing games, “Xenoblade Chronicles 3” is the true successor to the illustrious 1990s. An epic on the scale of “Elden Ring” and more epic than any entry in the God of War series, it is ambitious, tragic, and driven by emotion.
The soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda, who also scored “Chrono Trigger,” widely regarded as the pinnacle of video game music, makes it easy to fall in love with the game. If you long for the classic Final Fantasy romance, now is your chance to return to the series.
