It was Saturday, December 30, 2023, when the beloved music teacher of Smithfield High School departed her life in a shocking turn of events. Reports have suggested the news of Katherine Young’s death was confirmed and shared publicly by Smithfield High School Music Booster Club through a social media post. Although the school did not reveal the cause of death of the late music teacher, NBC affiliate WJAR announced that Katherine Young passed away from the issues that occurred from the flu. Katherine Young passed away suddenly after falling ill with the flu. The school stated on social media following her departure, “The loss of Katherine has left a hole in our department and our lives. She was just the spark of the school.” After her death, the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association urged the community members to wear purple in honor of her memory.
