James Gunn Puts an End to a Superman Casting Rumor

James Gunn is telling fans again not to believe everything they hear about casting for the Superman movie. Since there aren’t many facts about Superman: Legacy, it’s not surprising that rumors are always going around.

Only a few things have been confirmed about DC’s Superman reboot. So far, fans know that the movie will be called “Superman: Legacy” for now, that Henry Cavill will not play Superman again, that James Gunn will write and direct the movie, and that it will come out in 2025.

Since there aren’t many facts, there have been a lot of questions and rumors. One of the most important questions has been who will play Superman. With Cavill’s Superman out of the picture, who will don the blue and red suit next is anyone’s guess.

Even though there have been no official casting announcements, fans are starting to get a better idea of what Gunn is looking for in his next Superman.

Do you know that the video game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League won’t be released for a few more months, but Rocksteady Studios has just provided the most in-depth look at the game to date:

In response to a rumor that the studio had already sent out casting calls for Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen roles for actors in their twenties, Gunn tweeted –

“Untrue. Other than making lists, we haven’t started casting yet, and it’s not just for people in their twenties.”

Gunn had said before that his Superman would be younger than forty and could even be younger than Batman. Fans probably won’t have to wait too much longer for more information about who will play Superman. Gunn said, “Yes,” when asked if fans could expect big casting news in the next six months.

Even though a short tweet isn’t the same thing as an official announcement, Gunn doesn’t mess around with his online presence and hasn’t done it on purpose in the past. The Twitter exchange happened last month, so fans are even closer to getting big news about upcoming DC projects – how close remains unclear.

Fans are still waiting for a big announcement, but Gunn’s latest tweet doesn’t tell us much. In a tweet from January, Gunn made it clear that casting wouldn’t start until the movie’s script was finished. In his most recent tweet about the subject, he says that he has been making a list of actors who could be in Superman: Legacy.

Fans can therefore assume that the script has been written and that Gunn and his team are moving slowly into the next stages of pre-production. Gunn hasn’t paid attention to rumors about who should play Superman, but that hasn’t stopped fans from telling him who they think should be the next one.

Euphoria’s Jacob Eldori is a popular pick, as are Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell and Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery. Gunn’s talk about the age range does leave the door open for many young actors who are just starting out and are looking for a project that will help them get to the next level in their careers.

Who will be the next Superman is still unknown, but one thing is for sure: whoever it is will have big shoes to fill. Superman: Legacy is expected to be in theaters on July 11, 2025.
