From Thursday, October 26, 2023, the visa services will be resumed for business, medical, and conference. The Indian High Commission said, “Emergency services will continue to be handled by the Indian High Commission and the consulates in Toronto and Vancouver,” This decision was made by the Indian Embassy after the Canadian authorities announced it is reducing the number of diplomats in India from 62 to 41. This decision came after India warned it would strip their diplomatic immunity whereas Canadian officials described it as a violation of the Geneva Convention. Last week India denied that it violated international law in asking Canada to reduce its diplomats in India so that both countries have the same number of diplomats stationed in each country. The diplomatic tensions escalated between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of being involved in the killing of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
Meanwhile, India denied the allegations by calling them “Absurd”. Hardeep Singh Nijjar advocated the creation of a separate Sikh state engraved out of India. He was wanted by Indian agencies on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and terrorism. Canadian authorities called for India to assist in the investigation into Nijjar’s death and expelled an Indian diplomat.
