IMD Predicts Moderate To Heavy Rainfall In Tamil Nadu, Waterlogging Occurred In Several Districts

The next two or three days in Tamil Nadu are going to be very inclement as the Indian Meteorological Department predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in some districts of the state. Meanwhile, the collector of the Nilgiri district, M Aruna, declared a holiday in Coonoor and Kotagiri regions for today. Therefore, all the government and private schools in the district will remain closed today due to heavy rainfall. On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department issued a statement forecasting heavy rainfall in several districts of the state over the next 48 hours or two days. According to IMD, heavy to extreme rain is likely to downpour at isolated places over the Theni, Thenkasi, Nilgiris, and Coimbatore districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, November 24, 2023. Also, heavy rain is likely to happen at isolated places over Tiruppur, Dindigul, Erode, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, and Thoothukudi districts of Tamil Nadu. The regional department, Chennai Meteorological Department reported the potential formation of Cyclonic Circulation in the South Andaman Sea on November 25. Balachandran who is the director of the regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said while speaking to ANI, “Last 24 hours, heavy rainfall was there in many places. We can see that the clouds, which were mostly in the eastern parts of the Bay of Bengal, have now moved. About 45 places recorded heavy rainfall, 8 places recorded very heavy rainfall, and 2 places recorded extremely heavy rainfall.”

On Wednesday, November 23, 2023, i.e. yesterday, the Indian Railways also called off its services between Coonoor and Mettupalayam on the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Route after heavy downpours and landslides happened in the region. The officials with railways South Salem Division said because of the bad climate, debris, and a mudslide that occurred blocking the track at Hillguro between Kallar and Runnimedu the services were temporarily suspended in the region.
