Madden 23 is the most realistic sports simulation game to date and the latest in a long line of them. Those who want to get good at the game will have to learn how it works, which means learning how to intercept the ball.
When your opponent has one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, you have to pick them off. But how does Madden 23’s interception work? With all the changes to the game, even people who have played Madden before might need some help.
How to Intercept Passes in Madden 23?
Interception means stealing the ball while it is in the air. In Madden 23, players should hold the LT button to strafe toward the ball and then press the Y button. On PlayStation, they will need to use the L2 button to move around and the Triangle button to catch the ball.
Beginners can intercept without having to strafe. They just have to hold down the catch button (Y on Xbox, Triangle on PlayStation). This makes the Lurker who is closest to the ball automatically pick it up. But it’s not as accurate as picking by hand.

Positioning is the key to being a good defender in Madden 23. Following the reticle on the ground will help players make sure that the defender is facing the direction of the pass. But they shouldn’t get too close to the reticle, because that will scare off the other player and take away the chance of a turnover.
When Interception Is Not Possible, What Should Be Done?
In Madden 23, you can also deflect or tackle a pass to stop it from going through. So, when it seems impossible to turn the ball over, players should instead try to deflect or tackle the ball. This is how:
- In Madden 23, it is easy to deflect the ball. Before the receiver catches the ball, players should press the X button (Square on PlayStation).
- To tackle, players must hold the A button (X on PlayStation) near the receiver. While tackling won’t result in a turnover, it certainly holds off the opposition.
Formations and Conditions Favorable to Interception
Players can set Cornerback Matchups to “By Overall” in the Coach Adjustments to make it more likely that they will pick off the ball. Through a stat-based matchup, makes it less likely that a pass will be dropped.
As for the formation, players will want to line up in a way that protects their quarterbacks and receivers from the other team. If the other team has three quarterbacks, they should use the Nickel formation. Players should instead choose the Dime or Dollar formation if they have four or more receivers.
Also, players in the defensive line might want to think about pressing left on the D-pad to adjust the linebackers and cornerbacks for the interception. Madden NFL 23 is now out for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
