Why Is Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC Only Available On PS5 and Not PS4?

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC: Guerrilla Games was created and Sony Interactive Entertainment published the action role-playing game Horizon: Forbidden West in 2022. Following on from the events of Horizon Zero Dawn (2017), this game is set in the Western United States which has been devastated by an extinction event brought on by a renegade robot swarm.

While doing so, the player will encounter hostile machine entities that must be defeated with either ranged or melee weapons in order to progress through the game and accomplish tasks.

The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of Horizon: Forbidden West were launched on February 18, 2022, to generally positive reviews. On April 19, 2023, a new add-on called Burning Shores will become available.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC release date

Sony and Guerrilla announced the 19 April 2023 release date for Burning Shores in December 2022. At this year's Game Awards, the annual awards and trailers event for the gaming industry, downloadable content was revealed.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC platforms

Burning Shores not arriving on both platforms that hosted Forbidden West is the most contentious aspect of otherwise unremarkable news. Since the DLC allegedly exceeds the technical capabilities of the PS4, Guerrilla Games has made the “tough decision” to only offer it on PlayStation 5. If you played the game's base on PS4, you'll need to upgrade to get access to the downloadable content.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC trailer

One trailer for Burning Shores has been released, and it's quite good as you'll see below.

It showcases a number of the places Aloy will go, as well as the enormous new robot that appears to have taken up residence in the Hollywood hills and will be her opponent.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC story

Los Angeles appears to have been hit especially hard by the post-apocalyptic events that have ravaged much of North America in Aloy's universe. It has been confirmed that Burning Shores will take place in this region and that it will serve as a coda to the events of Forbidden West.

Los Angeles is now a volcanic archipelago, and navigating it will be difficult and risky due to the lava flows and the vicious robotic inhabitants. There will undoubtedly be new faces to see and tales to learn about, but we'll have to wait till more is revealed before we can dive into the specifics.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC gameplay

From what Guerrilla has shown thus far, we can presume that Burning Shores will be essentially more of Forbidden West, but in a new location that is smaller and more focused than the game's main map.

Screenshots of the caravan highlight the fact that players can travel through land, sea, and air in Los Angeles on Sunwing. It appears to be a lively park as a result of this.

We anticipate engaging new classes of foes and gaining access to new weapons and tools in the DLC, although these details are subject to change until the pack is released.

Why Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC Is On PS5 & Not PS4

At the 2022 Game Awards, Guerrilla Games, the studio responsible for Horizon: Forbidden West, revealed that the upcoming downloadable content, Burning Shores, would be a PlayStation 5 system exclusive and will be released on April 19, 2023.

The promotional clip depicts a Horus war machine destroying the Hollywood sign, implying that Aloy will travel to post-apocalyptic Los Angeles. From the events of Forbidden West, Burning Shores will pick up with Aloy making her way south of the Tenakth territories.

Players are left wondering if the PS5's increased processing power would allow Burning Shores to include any significant improvements to the game's existing gameplay mechanics beyond a visual boost.

Players of Horizon: Forbidden West, for instance, complained that stealth was required during the game's new underwater exploring sections because Aloy couldn't fight. While Burning Shores may provide new weaponry to Aloy's armoury in Horizon Forbidden West, it already drastically improved and expanded Horizon Zero Dawn's already amazing gameplay mechanics.

The PS5 Has More Advanced Technical Capabilities

Developer Guerrilla Games explained the choice to develop a PS5 exclusive by saying, “To realise this great goal technically and creatively, we've made the difficult decision to focus all of our efforts on developing an extraordinary experience.”

Considering that the original game is available on both the PS4 and PS5, it's disheartening that the accessibility of the Burning Shores DLC has been given short shrift.

However, two years into the life cycle of the current-gen console, this is not surprising news; the fact that it comes for an expansion of a cross-platform game is the only surprise part.

Horizon's Burning Shore DLC Will Continue To Face Criticism

Aloy's unabashed strength and gender portrayal were two of the features in Horizon: Forbidden West that were criticised. Guerrilla Games persevered despite criticism of Forbidden West's unorthodox plot elements, such as Aloy's lack of romantic relationships.

Whether it was their intention or not, the creators of Horizon: Forbidden West created a game world where all players were welcomed into a defiantly hopeful setting where they could be themselves without fear of judgement or repercussion and still come together in times of crisis to do what they could to help.

If the Burning Shores downloadable content stays true to this philosophy, then players will be quite pleased. Horizon Forbidden West, like its predecessor Horizon Zero Dawn, is painstakingly developed, with the designers making sure that every optional task advances the main plot.

However, there is hope for series fans who don't have access to a PS5: creators have been known to promote PS5-exclusive titles before releasing them on PS4 instead. Seeing as how progress and technology are always bettering, technological restrictions are not an insurmountable obstacle forever.

Fans of the franchise may still have hope to play the Burning Shores DLC without shelling out hundreds of dollars for a new gaming device if Guerrilla Games officially ports the DLC to the PS4 at a later date or if devoted fans create game mods for the PS4 version.
