MetService Expects Heavy Rains In Westland and Strong Winds In South and Central New Zealand
According to the meteorological department of New Zealand, a strong breeze is in place till 3 pm on Saturday for Wellington. The strong winds can approach the Northwest to expose severe storms in places. Furthermore, the severe downpours can be watched until 5 pm for the Tararua Range and Mount Taranaki. The MetService further announced that periods of strong downpours are predicted for parts of the central North Island on Sunday, January 28, 2024. Focusing on Fiordland and Southern Westland for Saturday night and Sunday morning, MetService said a burst of heavy downpours can be seen which can also lead to flooding causing slipping risk in the region. The department is also concerned especially considering the large amount of downpours that have already fallen there this week. The weather forecast department also urged the Cantabrians to set their keen eyes on the alpine river’s level over the weekend amid the heavy rain. Fiordland can also see strong downpours tonight which can last till 4 am on Sunday. A spokesperson for Canterbury Regional Council said downpours on the West Coast will take place overnight which will cause more than normal flow in rivers popular for recreational activities. The affected rivers will be the Waiau Uwha, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Rakaia, and Rangitata rivers. The Canterbury Regional Council said staff would monitor the levels of the rivers, and update alerts for any flooding across the weekend. Peter Haddock who is the chair of the West Coast Regional Council said that the Waiho River has stayed at regular flows.
