TOKYO (AP). Beware of Tokyo Olympians, especially the big ones.

Bed frames in the Athletes Village at this year’s Olympics will be made of cardboard. Strong cardboard.

“These beds can hold up to 200 kilograms,” explained Takashi Kitajima, general manager of the Athletic Village, speaking through an interpreter.

This is about 440 pounds, and, of course, not a single Olympic athlete weighs that much.

“They are stronger than wooden beds,” Kitajima added.

He also took into account the possibility of celebrating in the wild room after, say, a golden victory.

“Of course, wood and cardboard would break if you jumped on them,” he said.

Single bed frames will be recycled to paper products after games. The components of the mattress – mattresses are not made of cardboard – will be recycled into plastic products.

The mattress is divided into three separate sections, and the stiffness of each of them can be adjusted.

The idea was to use materials that can be redone after the Olympic and Paralympic Games. But cardboard frames and coasters should give the rooms a Spartan look.

The organizers showed off beds and several other furnishings on Thursday at their headquarters. The entire Athletes Village complex will be commissioned in June. The Olympic Games open on July 24, then the Paralympic Games on August 25.

“The organizing committee was thinking about reusable items, and the bed was one of the ideas,” Kitajima explained, thanking local Olympic sponsor Airweave Inc. for execution.

Organizers say this is the first time that beds and bedding in Athletes Village have been made from renewable materials.

The Athletic Village, which is being built next to Tokyo Bay, will consist of 18,000 seats for the Olympic Games and will consist of 21 apartment buildings. In the next few years, more construction work is planned.

Real estate advertisements say apartments will be sold out later or rented out, with selling prices starting at 54 million yen – or about $ 500,000 – and growing three or four times as much. Some fear that apartments will flood the market, which could affect the value of real estate.

Apartments will be sold by various real estate companies. Announcements suggest that many of the apartments will be slightly larger than a typical Tokyo apartment, which is about 60-70 square meters – or 650-750 square feet.
