Final Fantasy 9 Remake: Square Enix’s Big Reveal of the Year!

Final Fantasy 9: The release of Final Fantasy 16, the console ports of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series and Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line, and the potential release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth all point to 2023 as a banner year for Square Enix’s Final Fantasy series.

Despite the many Final Fantasy games that Square Enix has already announced for 2023, the publisher has recently hinted that a major announcement has yet to be made that has nothing to do with any of the confirmed projects.

A major leak from the 2021 video game industry has given a major indication of the imminent return of some beloved Final Fantasy titles, though there are many possible explanations.

Multiple Square Enix games from Nvidia‘s GeForce Now leak have already been confirmed, and with an upcoming Final Fantasy 9 animated series, a remake announcement may come as early as 2023.

It’s now more likely than ever that Final Fantasy 9 will be remade thanks to the success of Kingdom Hearts 4. Nvidia’s GeForce Now service was responsible for one of the largest leaks of a video game ever in September 2021.

Massive amounts of major titles were leaked before their announcement, and the leak was quickly confirmed by titles announced in the months that followed.

Square Enix, whose games appeared in the leak multiple times, quickly confirmed Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade for PC, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and Kingdom Hearts 4.

If anything, Square Enix’s announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4 bolstered the veracity of the Nvidia leak. The Nvidia GeForce leak included some questionable games, including a remake of Final Fantasy 9.

Final Fantasy 9 is one of the most popular entries in the Final Fantasy series, but Square Enix has already remastered and ported it to modern platforms like PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC, so this purported remake would require more work than the recent remaster of Final Fantasy 8.

This is why it would be incredible to witness Final Fantasy 9 with updated visuals. It’s odd, but Square Enix is already heavily promoting Final Fantasy 9, which gives more weight to the rumors of a remake.

In 2021, Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios, a French animation studio, announced they would be working together to adapt Final Fantasy 9 into an animated series aimed at children and longtime fans of the Final Fantasy 9 video game.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake May Be Announced in 2023

While Final Fantasy 9 doesn’t have any major anniversaries to celebrate in 2023, there will be a slew of related releases that year thanks to the Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary project, which kicked off with the release of Stranger in Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin the year before.

As part of the Nvidia leak, we also learned about a remake of Final Fantasy Tactics, which, along with Final Fantasy 9, maybe the last of a long line of Final Fantasy projects to be revealed.

Since the Final Fantasy 7 remake project spawned a trilogy of games that some fans consider sequels to the original Compilation of Final Fantasy 7, a remake of Final Fantasy 9 is more likely to take a more modest approach to rebuild the classic JRPG.

Remaking the game in the vein of Trials of Mana or Valkyrie Elysium, two of Square Enix’s recent smaller-scale projects, would also make for a more convenient release to tie in with the forthcoming animated series.

A smaller scope could mean more attention to remaking all of Final Fantasy 9’s story in one satisfying modern JRPG, which is likely what most fans would prefer given that Final Fantasy 7’s remake has been split into three parts.

Since Square Enix has recently announced Live A Live and Octopath Traveler 2 in Nintendo Directs, five months before their respective releases, this also means the title could be announced relatively close to release.

Regardless, the rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake seems to be gearing up for a 2023 reveal, what with its inclusion in the Nvidia leaks and the upcoming release of its animated series adaptation. New versions of Final Fantasy 9 are out now for the Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
