Final Fantasy XVI Has Surpassed 3 Million in Sales

Since its release on June 22nd, Final Fantasy XVI has sold over three million copies, indicating that a large number of people continue to appreciate the dulcet mews of chocobos and the ever-present Cid. This new, darker take on the series is exclusive to the PS5 console, which makes these sales figures all the more impressive.

Comparatively, Final Fantasy XV sold five million copies during its launch week in 2016, but that game was available on both PS4 and Xbox One. According to Square Enix, this three million figure represents both digital and physical sales worldwide.

Do you know that the original 2010 release of Red Dead Redemption laid the stage for what would become one of the best-selling games of all time with the sequel, and now there are rumors that the original will be remastered? What follows is what we currently know regarding the possibility of RDR1 being remastered:

This is slightly less than the recent FF7 remake, which sold 3.5 million units within the first three days of its release. The remake was available on multiple consoles once more. It’s also important to note that the PS4 never experienced availability issues like the PS5, so the install base was significantly larger (though this is steadily changing).

All of these sales figures pale in comparison to Nintendo’s royal jewel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which sold 10 million copies in just three days.  However, JRPGs have historically struggled to match open-world adventures in terms of sales, particularly in the West. Positive evaluations and word of mouth likely contributed to Final Fantasy XVI’s impressive sales figures.
