Destiny 2 Breaks Steam’s Concurrent Player Record With Lightfall

Destiny 2 is having a big day because the long-awaited Lightfall expansion is now out. On Steam, the launch of the expansion seems to have helped the game reach a new record number of players at the same time.

Today, more than 300,000 people played the game at the same time on Steam, which is a new record for the Bungie game. According to historical data on SteamDB, the most people playing Destiny 2 at the same time was about 128,000. This means that Lightfall really did boost the game’s popularity, as Bungie had hoped.

Destiny 2 is also available on consoles, so the peak number of 300,000 players is only a small part of the game’s total audience. It’s likely that more people played Destiny 2 on PlayStation and Xbox at the same time Lightfall came out.

It’s no secret that Bungie’s first-person shooter Destiny 2 is a massively popular MMO. But there aren’t many options for melee weapons in the game.

After the glaive hybrid weapon’s controversial release and a year of people barely using it, it makes sense that Destiny 2 would benefit from having more melee weapon types. If you want to learn more about the subject, be sure to read our coverage:

It is a free-to-play game, and you can buy the Lightfall expansion on its own for $50 or as part of the $100 Annual Pass. In Destiny 2, Lightfall starts a new year and a new season called Defiance, which has new things to do, Exotics to collect, and weekly missions to do.
