Latest Grandmaster Nightfall Does Not Satisfy Destiny 2 Players

This week’s Nightfall activity in Destiny 2 reintroduces a Battlegrounds mission on the moon, but players are having a difficult time with it, especially those attempting Grandmaster runs of the activity. Grandmaster Nightfalls has always been one of the most difficult activities in Destiny 2, and while these endgame-level activities are intended to be challenging, the mechanics adapted from Battlegrounds activities only serve to make the experience frustrating and unfair, according to players.

For the majority of Destiny 2’s lengthy existence, Nightfall strikes have been strictly strikes. Though Nightfall activities are more difficult and provide better loot for players seeking a challenge, they have almost always been more difficult versions of strike activities that were designed to be three-player PvE missions with a range of difficulty levels.

Although similar in many ways, the Battlegrounds activities in Destiny 2 generally follow a completely distinct formula than the game’s strikes. While Battlegrounds are typically designed for three players, they are almost always introduced as seasonal activities and are typically much more forgiving in terms of respawns while providing a chaotic environment with a high adversary density.

Applying Grandmaster-level difficulty to a Battlegrounds activity involving rooms with infinitely spawning adversaries replaces any sense of difficulty with monotony. The Destiny 2 community has been quite vocal about its displeasure with this week’s Nightfall, which is the PsiOps Battlegrounds mission on the moon for the Season of the Risen.

One fan under the name Doomestos1 on Reddit summarizes many of the community’s complaints in a post on the site, referring to the current Nightfall as a “tedious nightmare” because of the continual advertisements and the time it takes to complete each section as a result.

Savathun’s projections and the enemy herself appear to be a major issue with the current Nightfall, as her Arc lightning attack is capable of one-hitting players even when they are in cover. This is due to a notorious and exceptionally long-lasting bug in Destiny 2 that causes enemy damage output to be proportional to frame rate, with greater frame rates sometimes resulting in Guardians dying quickly or instantly.

This isn’t even the first time Bungie has repurposed a Battlegrounds activity as a Nightfall activity in Destiny 2; a particular Battlegrounds mission on Mars received a similar, if not greater, amount of fan backlash when it went live earlier this year. With this week’s Nightfall on the Moon, it appears that the developers did not heed much of that feedback, as players are once again confronted with a number of the same issues.
