Delhi’s AQI Slips Into ‘Poor’ Category, Currently At 209

Recently, the national capital region took a breath of relief with the revoke of GRAP-4 by Delhi’s Environment Ministry as the air quality of Delhi has improved marginally and slipped into the “Poor” category from the “Severe” category. A few days back, the AQI of Delhi was on the verge of falling into the “Severe Plus” category but the Delhi Government’s effort to tackle the pollution, including the Odd-Even rule and ban on Diesel vehicles alongside the construction works in Delhi, led to the air quality of the city to improve slightly. Delhi AQI

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, i.e. today, the overall air quality index of the national capital was measured at 290 by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). It is said that this improvement was because of favorable atmospheric conditions, mainly wind speed and direction. On Friday, November 17, 2023, the air quality of Delhi was on the verge of falling into the ‘severe plus’ category prompting the Delhi Government to implement the odd-even car rationing rule in the capital city.

The next day, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, the average air quality of Delhi for 24 hours, recorded every day at 4 pm, was measured at 319. Before the Diwali festival, the air quality improved relatively more due to rain but after the festival the air pollution rose due to intense firecrackers that burst during that period and the burning of stubble in the neighboring states including Haryana Punjab, and Rajasthan. Moreover, the unfavorable weather conditions including calm winds and low temperatures, compounded the effects of air pollution causing the dispersion of pollutants. The neighboring cities of Delhi like Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Greater Noida, Noida, and Faridabad also record poor to very poor AQI at 276, 322, 228, 265, and 309 respectively. For the unversed, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 is said to be “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 is “moderate”, 201 and 300 calls “poor”, 301 and 400 becomes “very poor”, 401 and 450 is “severe”, and above 450 “severe-plus”. As air quality improved, the Centre removed stringent curbs on Saturday, including a ban on construction work related to linear projects and the entry of diesel trucks into Delhi.
