The synopsis of The Bridge episode of NBC Dateline on January 21, 2024, at 8 PM EST, reads “North Carolina detectives search for answers in the murder of 28-year-old Fayetteville construction worker James Chambers; featuring interviews with James’ family members and investigators at the center of the case.” In August 2014, James Chambers who was a Fayetteville construction worker disappeared on August 15. He was last seen at his home before he went out with Howard Adrian Ashleman.

Reportedly, James and Howard headed out for their lifeguarding work at Lake Leamon in Wallace. The case remained unsolved until Howard Adrian Ashleman was arrested in February 2018, which eventually came as a resolution of the missing case. Hannah Jones, wife of Howard Adrian Ashleman, recorded his confession which led to his arrest. In his confession, Howard confessed that he accidentally shot James Chambers during a heated argument. Howard Adrian Ashleman pleaded guilty to killing James Chambers. His confession led to a sentence of a minimum of 15 years and six months of jail and a maximum of 19 years and eight months of jail with an additional six months for failing to confess his crime in time. Howard Adrian Ashleman was arrested on February 12, 2018, on first-degree murder charges. Additionally, he was also charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon. After four years of the crime, he recorded his confession and surrendered to the police.
