Dead Cells, a roguelike take on the Metroidvania genre, has announced when its future downloadable content, Return to Castlevania, will be available. There will be a crossover with the legendary Konami series, it was confirmed late last year. This is the most recent and, hopefully, not the final big DLC addition to Dead Cells.
After its 2018 release, Dead Cells was immediately recognized as a major achievement in the history of indie video games. The game was well received by critics at its release and has since sold over 5 million copies around the world. The game continued to release downloadable content and even published a Dead Cells roadmap for 2022, both of which showed that development wasn’t stopping anytime soon. Finally, fans have an idea of when to expect new episodes.

It was announced late last year that Dead Cells would be collaborating with the Castlevania series. The DLC’s name, Return To Castlevania, was teased in a trailer that dropped in January, giving players a taste of what was to come.
The DLC’s new trailer and release date were announced at the most recent Nintendo Direct. The teaser pays homage to the original franchise in a number of ways, including by using music and level designs that seem to have been taken directly from the series’ classic entries. Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania downloadable content is scheduled for a March 6 release.

The Castlevania franchise has been around for a long time. Castlevania, released in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, has generated a plethora of sequels, spinoffs, tributes, and spiritual successors since its inception. After the underwhelming success of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, publisher Konami shifted its focus from video game development to other industries, and the Castlevania series was subsequently halted.
The year 2021 saw the release of the most recent installment in the Castlevania series from Konami, titled Castlevania: Advanced Collection. It is unclear at this time if the company has plans to distribute further parts.
Three substantial pieces of downloadable content (DLC) have been released for Dead Cells since the game’s initial release. It has been reported that Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania is twice as large as previous DLCs. Several previews hint at fights against Dracula and Death, with the player donning the Belmont look, joining forces with Richter Belmont and Alucard, and using weapons similar to those used by the characters of the game. It remains to be seen, though, if the DLC succeeds in recreating the spirit of the original games.
