Brief History of Nintendo’s Professor Layton Video Game Series

While not all of the announcements in Nintendo’s most recent Direct were of the same caliber, Professor Layton fans were undoubtedly pleased with what they saw. The unexpectedly lengthy Nintendo Direct had more than 40 minutes of nonstop revelations, catch-ups, and updates.

Fans of Professor Layton have been forced to put up with knockoffs for years, but Nintendo has finally listened to them and will soon be releasing a brand-new Professor Layton game on the Nintendo Switch.

Fans are eager to learn anything they can about the recently revealed Professor Layton and the New World of Steam because it has been nearly ten years since the previous full-fledged Professor Layton game. The ideal time to reflect on the series’ humble beginnings is now, as fans wait for Nintendo to release more information about the upcoming mystery puzzle game.

A Brief History of the Professor Layton Franchise

Professor Layton, the first installment in the series, had its debut in Japan in February 2007 and the rest of the world in February 2008. Professor Layton and the Curious Village, the first game in the series, established the series’ tone and premise flawlessly.

Players assume the roles of Professor Layton and his young apprentice Luke as they explore the mysterious village of St. Mystere in search of the legendary Golden Apple.

Professor Layton’s gameplay is based on a basic but engaging paradigm in which the player conducts an interview with a figure or studies an object before solving a puzzle to learn the truth about it. Multiple variants exist for each puzzle, ranging from a straightforward logic problem to a sliding puzzle or a brain teaser.

If you solve a riddle, you’ll either advance the story or earn parts to construct a robot dog that can help you find secrets. Professor Layton and the Curious Village is an excellent entry point for the series. It displays right away how homey and relaxing it can be, from the art style to the subtle and straightforward approach to puzzles.

The first Professor Layton was so well received that a sequel, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, was released a little more than a year later. In this installment, which closely resembles its predecessor in terms of gameplay, Professor Layton and Luke board a train and journey across the country to solve the mystery of the Diabolical Box.

The game’s charm and intriguing puzzles made it a hit despite the widespread complaint that it was too identical to the original. Exactly one more year passed before the publication of the third installment. This installment, titled Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, features some time-traveling antics and a slightly more experimental tone than its predecessors.

A prequel trilogy will explore the character’s formative years, beginning with 2011’s Professor Layton and the Last Specter. The Last Specter, the series’ final Nintendo DS installment, takes place three years before the original game and tells the story of Layton and Luke’s first meeting and adventure together.

This installment maintained the standard structure but with a new and exciting role-playing game (RPG) added as a bonus feature: Professor Layton’s London Life. The following year saw the release of Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask for the Nintendo 3DS.
