On October 16, Monday, the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) announced the appointment of career diplomat Arindam Bagchi as the next ambassador to the UN and related international bodies. However, the MEA did not mention when will Arindam Bagchi take over the assignment but it is said that he will soon replace the incumbent representative of India to the UN. The date of his taking the charge has not been disclosed yet. Arindam Bagchi will be the successor of Indra Mani Panday who is the incumbent Indian representative to the UN in Geneva.
Mani Panday was announced as the envoy to the UN in July 2020. After serving three years in Geneva, Mani Pandey will come back to New Delhi. Who is Arindam Bagchi?
Arindam Bagchi is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 1955 batch. Notably, Bagchi was appointed as the MEA spokesperson back in March 2020, at the time when the country was struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Bagchi is famous for deftly handling media discussions around crucial topics such as the Sino-Indian border row in eastern Ladakh, New Delhi’s G20 presidency, and the Indian government’s COVID-19 strategy, during his tenure.
