Who Was Antonia Brico’s Husband?

Antonia Brico was born on June 26, 1902, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was an American conductor and pianist who died on August 3, 1989, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 87. The Dutch-born American pianist was widely recognized and acknowledged for being the first woman to gain stardom as a leader of world-class symphony orchestras. Reportedly, Antonia Brico was just 6 years of age when she moved to the United States from the Netherlands in 1908 and settled in California. Antonia Brico attended an Oakland High School from where she graduated in 1919. By the time she passed out of high school, she had become a well-known pianist.

After graduating from Oakland High School, Antonia Brico went on to study at the University of California from where she graduated in 1923. During her college, Antonia Brico was the assistant to the director of San Francisco Opera where she learned piano from various teachers including Sigismund Stojowski. Eventually, her prowess on piano propelled her into the Berlin State Academy of Music in 1927. Two years later, Antonia Brico emerged as the first American to graduate in conducting. It is said that she also learned from Karl Muck. In 1930, she embarked on a new chapter of her life and became a professional conductor with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Critics did not hesitate to praise Antonia Brico for her appearances with the Los Angeles Symphony, the Hamburg Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony. As a guest conductor of the Musicians’ Symphony Orchestra, she debuted in New York, Detroit, Michigan, and Washington DC.
