Reportedly, there were a total of 45 passengers on the flight, out of which only 16 could survive. The plane that crashed was Flight 571, a Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild FH 227D aircraft that took off in 1972 from Montevideo, Uruguay, but unfortunately, it became synonymous with survival and tragedy. As mentioned, the flight was carrying a rugby team of the Old Christians club, their family members, and friends. Reportedly, the flight was en route to land in Santiago, Chile. But the journey from Uruguay to Chile took an unexpected turn when adverse weather conditions forced the survivors to turn into cannibals.

It is said that the flight made an unexpected decision to stop in Mendoza, Argentina due to adverse weather conditions which became the backdrop of the Andes plane crash and proved to be fateful. The plane resumed the journey on October 13, 1972, which soared over the Andes where an error unfolded in its navigation. The pilot thought the plane had safely crossed the mountain range and started descending while being unaware of the danger. In a shocking turn of events, the plane crashed into the mountain. The crashed plane came to a rest at an altitude of more than 11000 feet.
