Who are Amy Coney Barrett’s Parents?
On January 28, 1972, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Linda (née Vath) and Michael Coney welcomed Amy Coney Barrett into the world. Barrett is an American judge and lawyer who is well-known for her large family, Catholic faith, and conservative views. Since October 27, 2020, she has been an associate member of the US Supreme Court. She became the fifth woman to serve on the Court when President Donald Trump nominated her. From 2017 until 2020, Barrett presided as a Circuit Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. In 1997, she earned a J.D. with honors from Notre Dame Law School after graduating from Rhodes College.
After graduating, Barrett worked as a clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge Laurence Silberman. She began working at the Notre Dame Law School in 2002 and became a professor by 2010. Due to the proximity to the 2020 presidential election and the Senate’s earlier decision to not hold hearings for Merrick Garland in 2016, Barrett’s Supreme Court candidature was controversial. By a vote of 52-48, the US Senate accepted her over the objections of two Democrats and one Republican. Barrett, who has been referred to be Justice Scalia’s protégé, favors originalism in constitutional interpretation and textualism in legislative interpretation. She is typically considered a member of the conservative Court bloc.
Her mother Linda was a homemaker and a high school French teacher, while her father Mike Coney was an attorney for Shell Oil Company. Mike Coney and Linda Coney were law school students when they tied the knot. Later, Shell Oil relocated to Houston to work in a senior role. But he left soon after because it was too much for his family. He was later rehired by Shell with the understanding that he would stay in Louisiana. In 2010, Mike became the coordinator for the People of Praise’s Southern Branches. In addition, he was a board member of Trinity Schools, a private school network associated with the organization.
In addition, Barrett and her spouse are also part of the People of Praise group, as are Amy’s parents. Amy Coney Barrett is one of six siblings, having one brother and five sisters. The oldest sister, Megan Edwards, is a partner in a Louisiana law company and a lawyer. Carrie Coney Urbanski is a mother of four children and a teacher. Three children and a nurse make up Vivian Coney Taylor. Mother of six, Eileen Coney O’Reilly works from home. Julie Coney Minaldi is a mother of three children and a lawyer. The lone brother, Michael Coney Jr., is a lawyer and a parent to two kids.
Barrett’s siblings attended her confirmation hearing in October 2020 and backed her appointment to the Supreme Court. They also complimented their sister’s integrity, intelligence, and character in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee. After graduating from Notre Dame Law School in Indiana, Amy Coney Barrett met her husband, Jesse Barrett. Jesse is a partner in a South Bend, Indiana, legal practice and a former federal prosecutor. Together, Amy and Jesse Barrett are parents of seven children, ages nine to nineteen. The oldest daughter, Emma, is a first-year student at Notre Dame University. Her mother refers to Vivian, who was adopted from Haiti when she was 14 months old, as a “miracle” since she overcame malnourishment and malaria.
