Airpods Max 2: Despite the premium AirPods Max model’s success, Apple has no plans to release a successor model. Since Apple introduced Lossless quality with Apple Music last June and AirPods Max technically can’t play in this quality, even via a wired connection, users expect Apple to announce a new model.
In May, Bloomberg’s Gurman reported that Apple might only be planning new colors for the AirPods Max, despite widespread assumptions that the $549 AirPods Max will remain unchanged for some time. Although AirPods Max has been out for an entire year, it is still unclear if and when Apple will release an updated version of these headphones.
A concept has been created to imagine what the AirPods Max 2 might look like, and it includes features like USB-C + MagSafe charging, some degree of water resistance, and more color options. It’s worth noting that Apple is attempting to improve the quality of the current generation of AirPods Max by developing a new Bluetooth codec.
Although enhancements are greatly appreciated, Apple will need to release a hardware update for this technology to be fully utilized by consumers. Apple may be prepping a new H2 chip, enhanced ANC, and Adaptive Transparency for the upcoming AirPods Pro 2, in addition to supporting Bluetooth 5.3.

Airpods Max 2 Release Date
At the beginning of December 2021, Apple introduced the AirPods Max. Given that rivals like Sony have already announced new headphones like the WH-1000XM5, it’s clear that it’s high time for a new set of over-ears.
Apple will likely unveil the AirPods Max 2 at next year’s WWDC in June or possibly at a different event around the same time. Still, Cupertino could unveil the iPhone 15 and accompanying features later toward the year’s end.
Airpods Max 2 New Features
Apple has been very quiet about the details of the ANC-capable AirPods Max 2, including their features and specifications. However, judging by the AirPods Pro 2, significant hardware and software upgrades are expected.

Design, port, and touch controls
The Lightning port used by the current AirPods Max headphones is proprietary, but USB-C could be used in its place. To comply with the new European standardization law, Apple is including the universal charging port on its devices. If the unique standard allows for faster-charging speeds, the AirPods Max 2 will benefit.
Apple’s second-generation over-ear headphones, for example, feature touch controls. An array of buttons in both earpieces of the original AirPods Max allowed for music management and the selection of different modes. These touch-based controls may use cutting-edge technology, such as ultrasonic sensors, and are not wholly outside the realm of possibility.
The concept of removable earcups for the next-gen AirPods Max to allow users to mix and match the headset’s colors is also possible. Apple considered including earcup swapping in the original headphones so they could be used with the customizable cans but ultimately decided against it. This is now more likely to occur with AirPods Max 2.

Other AirPods Max 2 Specs
Similarly to the AirPods Pro 2, Apple may equip the upcoming cans with a robust H2 audio chip and upgraded drivers and amplifiers. After a prominent Apple engineer reiterated that the company would be using SBC and AAC for the foreseeable future, this silicon may be paired with the latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 5.3.
However, the introduction of an LC3 or LE codec is highly unlikely. Other enhancements, such as a longer battery life, water resistance, an adaptive transparency mode, and enhanced noise cancellation, appear to be close. All of these, of course, will come with a hefty price tag.
How much will the AirPods Max 2 cost?
The cost of the AirPods Max 2 has not been made public. Only the Max 1, which retails for $549 (€549), is a reasonable point of reference for this article. Apple’s AirPods Max 2 could see a price increase upon release due to inflation and price disruptions caused by chip shortages.
There has been talked about introducing a more affordable model alongside the Max. According to Apple leaker Jon Prosser, this could come from a sports-focused “SE” model with a price tag of $350. It’s too soon to tell how this will vary from the Max model.
